neoqb has released patch 1.010 yesterday. Along the improvements and fixes there is a new plane coming with it - the Fokker D.VIII, a revolutuionary monoplane design from mid 1918. First it was called Fokker E.V and it saw some front line service. After wing failures it was withdrawn from the front. After the wing problems were resolved it was called Fokker D.VIII but did not see front line service anymore.
The next plane will be a Fokker D.VIII according to the Rise Of Flight News Page. As this type most likely did not do front line service in the closing stages of World War I neoqb maybe made a typo and it will possibly be the earlier Fokker E.V with its wing problems which was later named D.VIII after its wing was reworked. The Fokker D.VIII is available for US-$ 7.62 in the neoqb online store.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Add On 1 Logo (2009)

'Hat In The Ring' (abbreviated: HitR), the first expansion for Over Flanders Fields - Between Heaven And Hell has been released on 11th of December. Today MiniPatch 1.46 for Hat In The Ring has been released by OBD Software. You can download the new MiniPatch on the Over Flanders Fields Download Page (please refresh the page by pressing CTRL+F5). It is for Hat In The Ring only and not for stock OFF P3.

New changes by MiniPatch 1.46:
  • Fixed error when launching mission using French pilot in Esc Lafayette (during the period it is named "Esc Américaine") between April - Nov 1916
  • Random Mission failed to load error on Lone Wolf missions
  • Gun sight View and gauges on new Nieuports models was incorrectly assigned (affects 24 all, N17 Bis, N28)
  • AI skill issues - AI fixed to be same as BH&H - however as AI skill in HitR is liked by many we have made them both available in the Manager "Workshop" settings
    New AI settings are:
    • Aggressive - is the BH&H AI
    • Less Aggressive - same as release version of HitR
    • Historical - Will vary the two in this mode. 1915 will use the less aggressive AI. 1916 onwards will use the more aggressive AI. Note any changes in AI setting in workshop, or if the date changes from 1915 to 1916 in Historical AI mode will require a restart of the OFF Manager before any changes take place. The option will also add a little randomness but also again will not change until a restart of the OFF Manager is done (so restart more often to have Historical AI mode more effective).
  • Bristol Scout Skin issue fixed
  • 49th Aero emblem fixed to show correct number

There are strong indications that neoqb possibly may drop the always online requirement for their W.W.I flight sim title 'Rise Of Flight'. There was a posting on the German Aerosoft forums stating that there had been discussions between neoqb and their publisher for Europe Aerosoft to implement the possibility to play the sim offline. This will be introduced in the first quarter of 2010. This is not officially confirmed as the developer's reactions on the official RoF Forum are telling us.

Just speculating here: the sales for RoF have been satisfying at least in Europe but there are still a lot of potential customers which Areosoft misses out on them because of the online requirement and the reluctance of the European crowd to accept a DRM system which needs an always online check versus a once a week check like other games have. Thus the pressure on the developer may be high to change the strategy.

Rise Of Flight Logo
Albert 'Loft' Zhiltsov, Rise Of Flight producer, has announced today on the RoF News Page that Patch 1.009 will be available soon. 'Soon' has been stated more precisely by Lefty, neoqb Forum Manager, as 4th of December. That means tomorrow ;o) The most significant features of patch 1.009 are:

Playback:
A recording function for the game easily switched on via one button and with more possibilities to define the content in the video. For example it can be defined which objects in the mission will be tracked by the playback function.

Input settings:
Currently the controls setup is made in the RoF Settings outside of the game. To fine tune the controls is very time consuming as one has to end and start the game again each time the adjustments have to be done. neoqb thought most users would play with a cheap controls equipment but in fact the flight sim enthusiasts the sim is aimed at has sophisticated equipment with manually adjustable setup. In patch 1.009 neoqb will shift the control setup within the game itself with adjustable sensitivity settings. A good step in the right direction.

Mods ON/OFF:
As a modded game is regarded by neoqb as prone to cheating there will be two game modes introduced. A gameplay mode with inclusion of the unofficially modded content and one without the modded content - the stock game. Only games without using modifications will be counted in the global leader boards.

New key assignments: Right Mouse Button and Esc key
The in-game menu was separated into the 'Exit Menu' and the'Widgets menu'.

Change coalition:
The ability, within multiplayer, to change coalition in the plane list screen before each mission in rotation will be introduced by patch 1.009 too.

RoF - Keys assignment within the game - Screenshot by neoqb (03-Dec-2009)

From Albert 'Loft' Zhiltsov, Rise Of Flight producer, comes a very extensive overview about the work in progress for the next patch 1.009. While patch 1.008 was regarded as work on the flight sim's basis patch 1.009 will introduce more improvements. While some things are scheduled for release in the more distant future without telling details like multi player dog fight mode and a game SDK for 3rd party developers the features intended for introduction by patch 1.009 are explained more in detail:

Winter Season:
There will be a winter season introduced with appropriate textures.

Sky Colours:
More realistic sky colouring system.

Coop Game Mode:
A simplified coop mode for multi player where one can choose sides without leaving the mission.

Skin Management And Development:
An official way of handling custom skins which currently is achieved inofficially by a 3rd party tool - the Skin Sharing Tool. The custom skins will be displayed only when the planes using those are in the vicinity of the player to save system resources on the player's PC. Also a Skin Development SDK and other tools will be introduced to ease the production of custom skins.

River Ships:
Ships on the rivers which navigate along a given route to enliven the empty rivers in the sim.

RoF WIP - River Ship - Screenshot by neoqb (20-Sep-2009)

Realistic Smoke:
There will be smoke which interacts more dynamically with the environment such as wind influencing the direction and so on.

Planes Flight Models:
Some planes flight models will be improved according to the results of more research on plane types modeled in the simulation.

There is an indication that there will be other improvements not covered above but they are not published currently. It looks like neoqb now wants to start a new communication strategy towards their end users and this is surely the right way to establish a better relationship between developer and customer.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

Winder, lead developer of OBD Software, has released an information about the contents of the first AddOn Pack for the W.W.I flight sim Over Flanders Fields - Between Heaven And Hell.

Guys,

The first addon pack for OFF will be quite extensive and will include:

1) Nieuport N28
2) Nieuport N24 (Brit and French versions)
3) Nieuport N24 Bis (Brit and French Versions)
4) Nieuport N17 Bis
5) Fokker EV
6) Airco DH5
7) Extra squads and amended squads to take the above craft into account for full campaign immersion for all craft - American squads are a key point!
8) Comprehensive skin set for the above craft for full immersion in the campaigns
9) Personalised skin functionality - player can now fly with his own unique custom skin.
10) Actual Wind Buffeting effect as you fly - gets worse with the weather conditions (configurable as off or on in workshops)
11) Wind noise in every craft - speed dependent - increases with speed
12) Revised Railyards - all are now co-incident with railway tracks and with switchbacks and revised textures
13) Overhauled hi res airfield textures and revised airfield tree models
14) Revised forest and woods layouts
15) Revised autogen tree models (only when set to high terrain detail)
16) Improved mobile ground unit deployment in theater
17) Manager main menu picture now changes according to players pilot nationality.

And many minor tweaks.

Best

WM

OFF Phase 3 WIP - Fokker D.VIII - Screenshot by Polovski (07-Aug-2009)

This will be the first Add On Pack for OFF Phase 3. It is nice to see four of the most known Nieuport fighters represented in the sim and also my favourite plane - the Fokker D.VIII - here represented by an early version called Fokker E.V. Also the improvements of the sim environment like increased wind buffeting and speed dependent wind noise will add to the great immersion factor OFF Phase 3 already has. The new aircraft will fill in gaps in squadrons as the existing squadrons had the planes represented as placeholders only or they were not available for flying.

A release date has not been set - Winder hopes for Christmas 2009 - also a price of this add on has not been published yet. Furthermore Winder indicated to bring in more two-seaters for a prospective Add On #2 .

Rise Of Flight Logo
Patrick A. Wilson of Red Baron II/3D modding fame (Western Front Patch et al) has written a Campaign Engine for Rise Of Flight called 'RofCampaign'. It adds the missing campaign feature to RoF and offers/will offer the following current and future possibilities:

The RoFCampaign program's current state:

Create a campaign
- Create a pilot Choose a country to fly for
- Choose a campaign start date
- Choose a rank
- Choose a squadron
- RoFCampaign creates your squadron.

View your squadron:
- See your squadron.
- Their rank.
- How many missions they have flown.
- How man victories they have.
- Future development

Select a pilot to view his details:
- His name and rank.
- His status.
- His victories - the type and date they were scored.

The environment:
- Squadron placement is fairly accurate but does not change
- Aircraft assignments will be accurate within game limitations.
- Yes, every Allied recon squadron is flying Breguets - including the British.
- … and every German recon squadron is flying DFWs.
- Updates will be made ASAP as aircraft come online.

Generate a mission:
- RoFCampaign generates a mission in the RoF "Missions" directory in the form <pilot name>.mission
- You fly the mission in RoF
- Members of your squadron are assigned to the mission.
- Missions are air start
- Friendly and enemy flights are generated.
- Mission parameters are varied.
- Flight path
- Mission altitude
- Squadrons assigned to fly
- Number of aircraft in each formation.
- Number of friendly and enemy flights.
- Which of your squadron mates will fly with you.
- You are the lead.

Enter a combat report
- After flying the mission enter a combat report.
- Assign victories to pilots
- List losses
- RoFCampaign updates missions flown and victories for each pilot.
- Possibility of AI improvement
- Possibility of promotion
- Possibility of transfer
- RoFCampaign determines who was lost.
- Possibly killed.
- Possibility of surviving the shoot down.
- An event log is generated and displayed for that mission.
- The campaign date is updated.
- Random change adjusted based on season.
- Fly more in April - October, less November - March.

Transfer
- Transfer to a different squadron

GUI:
- WWI posters as backgrounds for most screens
- Chalkboard for squadron information
- Paper background for reports.

Future development:

View inactive squadron mates
- Look back at who has flown with you and what became of them.
- Tallies of total victories and losses for your squadron.

Aces:
- Add historical aces.
- See how you stack up.
- Assign historically accurate skins to aces.
- Will require a Neoqb mission results file before this can be reasonably implemented.
- OK - I might be able to pull this off without a results file, but it would be much better with.

Squadron:
- Pilot pictures
- Implement historical accuracy.
- Improve historical accuracy of aircraft assignments as new planes become available.
- Assign individual skins to your squadron mates.
- Assign historically accurate skins at a squadron level.

Generate a mission
- More mission variety.
- Mission success or failure depending on criteria.
- Squadron quality
- Vary AI settings for generic pilots based on quality settings.
- Work with other AI parameters (bugout possibilities, etc.)
- Vary them to increase unexpected behavior.
- Ground start.
- Ground objects.
- Map updates.
- You may or may not lead depending on your status in the squadron.

Enter a combat report
If Neoqb will generate a mission results file, I will use that instead of user entry.
Vary flight tempo based on historical data and not just seasons (although they do sort of correspond).

RofCampaign is running under Java alongside Rise Of Flight so you need to get sure you have JAVA installed on your computer. If not then grab it here. The first release of RofCampaign can be downloaded from our Rise Of Flight Resources subsection. Follow the link to 'Gameplay Enhancements'.

Well done, Patrick. This is a great addition to our flight sim experience.

Today Update/Patch 1.008 for RoF has been released by neoqb. Among the changes, fixes and additions there are two new planes introduced by the patch: the Sopwith Camel F.I and the Fokker Dr.I. Both are obtainable via the RoF Online Store. I call this 'Day Of The Rotaries' ;o)

Here is the full list of changes, fixes and improvements:

Update 1.008 (30.10.2009) Patch Notes.

New Features:

- Fokker Dr. I added to the game and available for purchase.
- Sopwith Camel added to the game and available for purchase.
- New summer textures added.
- AI: New maneuver "hook turn" for close air combat added.
- AI: New maneuver "rolling" for close air combat added.
- PLANES: Blip switch added. Key assignment by default is: Shift + E.
- GUI: "Fly now" option added to the main menu.
- GRAPHICS: Cartridge belt disappears when out of ammo on Albatros D.Va, Pfalz D.IIIa.
- GRAPHICS: Radiator pressure cap added to Pfalz D.XII.
- STATS: Destroyed wagons are now counted in statistics.
- DOCUMENTATION: Rise of Flight Mission Editor Manual now available.

Changes/Fixes:

- AI: AI pilot shooting accuracy decreased.
- AI: AI gunner shooting accuracy decreased.
- AI: AI fighters no longer flee from a close fight.
- PLANES: Landing gear does not jam when lower wing is damaged.
- PLANES: Fokker D.VII now touches ground surface when standing.
- PLANES: Planes are now controlled by the lower ailerons when upper ones are damaged.
- PLANES: Force Feedback joysticks don't get stuck in extreme positions when elevator is damaged.
- PLANES: Nosed-over planes no longer jump.
- GRAPHICS: Sopwith Dolphin's sideslip indicator animation fixed.
- NETWORK: Pilots with empty machineguns can no longer shoot.
- GUI: Corrections made to German version.
- GUI: Corrections made to French version.
- GUI: Corrections made to Spanish version.
- GUI: Corrections made to English version.
- GUI: Corrections made to Russian version.

The patch is a 309 MByte automatic download. It looks like the stutter problems for some users introduced by Patch 1.007 and the joystick sensitivity issue have not been fixed. But the good thing is that the developers seemingly lowered the AI pilots' and gunners' ability to shoot with deadly precision. Also a blip switch was introduced for the rotary powered planes like the Nieuport 17, Nieuport 28 and Fokker Dr.I.

From Jason Williams, head of 777 Studios come two promo videos for the soon to be released and long awaited W.W.I fighter planes Sopwith Camel F.I and Fokker Dr.I. Both planes will be introduced by the coming Update 1.008. The release date of this update is not known but speculations point to an End of October or beginning of November release.

Being the most prominent adversaries during W.W.I both videos show some in-flight action of these planes against each other. But have a look for yourself (HD version recommended):

Sopwith Camel F.I Promo Video:

Fokker Dr.I Promo Video:

Well, some good acting there but I am confident that both planes can be pushed further to the limits of their flight envelope ;o)

It is being said that the Sopwith Camel F.I killed more pilots during training flights than in combat operations. Also two of the most famous fighter aces Werner Voss and Manfred von Richthofen were killed in their Fokker Dr.I planes. So, how long will you last in them?

Today was the official release of the German boxed version of the W.W.I flight simulation Rise Of Flight by Russian development studio neoqb. The initial release of RoF was in May 2009 in Russia and CIS countries. The German version of the sim is available via online shops as Aerosoft's Sim Shop and also in the electronic discounter shops. Aerosoft is the publisher for European Countries. I picked up my copy right after work from an electronic discounter shop. Although it belongs to the biggest multiple shop for electronic devices in Germany they had ordered only six boxes of the sim and all of them were still available in the evening. Nevertheless I got my copy and went home to try it out. I was very curious as of what had changed since I tested the beta version in April.

Rise Of Flight - German Release 1.007 Box Content - picture taken by Gremlin (22-Oct-2009)

I opened the box and to my pleasure the DVD contained the game patched to the current version 1.007, a very wise decision to ship the game already patched. Thus, of course, no patch update was required after installation. The German release box by distributor Aerosoft contains the DVD, a thin printed booklet in German language with introduction and installation instructions, a printed map of the area of operations, a document with key and control assignments as well as a promotional booklet for Aerosofts Flight Simulator X products. On the back side of the map sheet one can finde the rules of the Dicta Boelcke.

I still had the RoF Beta installed although I could not play it anymore. So I uninstalled it and rebooted. The installation of the release version went smooth and no patch download was needed. I adjusted the settings and started the sim. All looked familiar. After logging in I tried to start a new profile and was presented with '#2: Your connection to Master Server was lost. Check your internet-connection'. The profile was not saved. I tried this six times with two restarts of the game. Internet connection was working the whole time. Finally I could save a profile. As the Beta only had the SPAD S.XIII and the Fokker D.VII I took the Albatros D.V for a spin in the 1 vs. 1 mission 'Russian Roulette'. After the end of the first mission run I had the same error notice about the connection to the Master Server. After the second run of this mission I was surprised with a frozen screen at the end of the mission. After that I had to reboot the computer. One more time I had troubles getting a BlueScreen with some Nvidia .dll file involved. After another reboot all seemed to be good. I played about two hours including successfully logging in into multiplayer servers. Online connection especially to the master server seems to be shaky. It was much better during the beta test. Maybe the troubles with neoqb's server are because due to the long expected German release and a lot of pre-orders many copies had been sold and delivered today.

Rise Of Flight - Albatros D.V - screenshot by Gremlin (22-Oct-2009)

I have to collect more flight sim mileage and will write up a review of 'Rise Of Flight'. There are some reviews out there but they are discussing earlier versions of the sim and I like to have my own mindset also. As a quick first conclusion: installation and setup went without troubles but gameplay and internet connection requirement still needs attention by the developers.

About a year ago a small group of students started a W.W.I flight sim development project (we reported). An announcement was made in our forums when the group was seeking for help with the project. Since then it was very quiet about the project besides the announcement that the project was titled Flying Samurai. But now there is a new message on our forums with some updates about the project.

The project website has been updated with a first video:

Also there are some public screenshots:

Flying Samurai - WIP - Screenshot by Flying Samurai Development Team (15-Oct-2009)

Flying Samurai - WIP - Screenshot by Flying Samurai Development Team (15-Oct-2009)

Flying Samurai - WIP - Screenshot by Flying Samurai Development Team (15-Oct-2009)

The goal of the sim is to develop a WW1 flying simulator with a physically based flight model that could be played in single player mode, either as a short distraction (single mission) or as a regular pastime (career), and in network mode over LAN (although with some luck, it might just be fast enough for the Internet). The AI should be good enough to keep you entertained and the graphics good enough to make you notice (we know we have to put more work into that!). We've been striving to make the game as configurable as possible - from map and geographical coordinates down to the award and rank criteria.

It sure looks interesting and itlooks like a lot of work has been invested in the past year. So if you are interested in helping please contact the team via their website.

German Multiplayer Squadron Jasta 99 is currently organizing a multi player event for Rise Of Flight on Saturday, 17-Oct-2009 starting at 10:00 a.m. Central European Time (German Local Time, notice there is still daylight savings time). The Event is called "Saturday Bash - Mission Face 2 Face" and involves all players doing an air-start and a king-of-the hill scenario with the last man standing (better: flying) will be the winner. Due to performance reasons all in-game AI units will be taken out of the game immediately. The server can hold up to 32 participants right now. Players can fly with custom skins when using the Skin Sharing Tool provided by Jasta 99 via their other site www.rof-tools.de (Login required).

Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar Stick and Throttle
Since Cougar World the centre of the HOTAS Cougar Community is down for several weeks now and I am getting more and more support requests by users via e-mail I decided to open up a temporary forum for Cougar users here on Wings Of Honor. I am in no way affiliated to Thrustmaster but simply to the fact that I have written a Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar Modding - U2Nxt Gimbals and Hall Sensors Review people are asking me questions about support topics and order information.

Therefore I have opened up a temporary HOTAS Cougar Forum. It can be also accessed via the main forum link by selecting the 'Hardware' category. I want to post some information and documents there such that at least the basic directions for the Cougar Coummunity can be provided. I invite all visitors to help me with answering questions and providing information as I can not do that all alone.

Thanks

Red Baron Pack Banner (2009)

About a month ago we had reported about the announcement of purchasing the rights to the Red Baron Series by Damon Slye once co-founder of Dynamix and today head of Mad Otter Games which caused quite a stir and was followed by high expectations amongst us W.W.I flight simulation fans. Now Mad Otter Games has joined forces with GOG.com (short for Good Old Games) to bring back the Red Baron Series in form of a so-called Red Baron Pack.

The Red Baron Pack contains Red Baron 1, Red Baron: Mission Builder and Red Baron 3D and comes as a 244 MByte download. The pack can be purchased for US-$ 9.99 at GOG.com. Also downloadable after purchase are manuals, maps and reference cards.

Red Baron Pack Title (08-Oct-2009)

GOG.com is a company which is specialised on selling old classic computer games, which they claim to be Windows XP and Vista compatible.

Well, this will not be the fulfilment of all the hopes the W.W.I flight sim community has. But it is a start and we hope that in case the full source codes of Red Baron and Red Baron II/3D could be found and returned to Mad Otter Games there will be fixes released for the most imminent bugs and hopefully in the long term there will be a successor to Part One and Two of the Red Baron Series. Meanwhile the bigger part of the code for Red Baron II in an early stage (V1.5) without the missing graphics modules has been handed over by Flybert to Damon Slye.

We have reached the 300.000 visits mark. Our count began in March 15th 2002 (site started in Oct 7th 2000) and it means theoretically we had 3300 visits per month. In fact today it is far more than this as we reached the 200.000 visits mark last year in November and it means we had 100.000 visits during the last 11 months making it to about 9100 visits per month in average. The sheer number of visits does not say anything about the amount of indvidual visitors, the quality of the site and what time people spend reading it but it is interesting to see the count raising from year to year. Very astonishing for such a niche themed site.

With the renewed interest in W.W.I flight sims like First Eagles, Over Flanders Fields and Rise Of Flight, to name a few, there is surely more information demand for news, downloads, tips & tricks, articles and such which we try to cover as best as we can. We surely hope you like what we do and if you do or if you don't then please leave us a little feedback in our guestbook or in our own forum.

Thank you

ArgonV is still working on improvements for FS-WWI. Today he has released a first Beta version for the Plane Pack 5 Patch V.1.0.

Ok, this was quick! But not dirty. Please, if you do not wish to mess up your on-line standard install DO NOT INSTALL THIS PATCH. This is only for those beta testers out there, or brave souls that don't care about on-line compatability.

List of included fixes/updates:

  • AEC ground vehicle shadow removed.
  • S.S. D.III compass texture file added.
  • The Breguet 14 is supposed to have twin Lewis guns in the rear gunner seat. The Lewis ring mount also was not operating correctly. This has been fixed.
  • Added rocket loadouts to the Spad 13 and U.S. Spad 13 and updated the Balloon Busting! missions that go with both of them.
  • Added rocket loadout to the Spad V.II. It is historical in that it is only a 6 rocket loadout as opposed to the normal 8 rockets.
  • New Sopwith Pup fuselage 3d model and cockpit padding. Also fixed inner support strut placement.
  • Corrected Bleriot's joystick clipping through the cockpit side walls.
  • Optimized Irish's Dodge Ball mission for better frame rate.

Download from here: (5.90 MB) FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 Patch v1.0 BETA

Report any bugs here, thanks all!

There is a wealth of new information available from neoqb regarding their W.W.I flight simulation Rise Of Flight. This information was researched and made available by Jasta 99 namely J99°Longarth during the 7th German Flight Simulator Conference held on 25th to 27th of September in Paderborn/Germany. Our thanks go to Jasta 99. In the following I will try to summarise the information.

Jasta 99 Logo
There will be changes to RoF in the future which will be:
  • It is planned that RoF will support not only DirectX9 for Windows XP but also DirectX 10 for Windows Vista and DirectX 11 for Windows 7
  • The game map will be made available in two variations: one very detailed version for single player mode and one performance optimized version for multi player mode.
  • The skin templates for creation of own skins will be made available in the near future.
  • neoqb will provide a SDK (Software Development Kit) for planes. A plug-in for 3ds Max is being planned.
  • In the future the player will be able to select between two game modes: original mode and moddded mode. In the original mode only the default files of the RoF installation will be used. All changes to the game and all add on skins will be ignored. In the modded mode the usage of all changed files and add on skins will be possible. Also neoqb will take over add ons and modifications into original mode on proposal and after a quality control has taken place. neoqb and its partners will not held responsible for any modifictions not officially approved.
  • In the more distant future a complete revamp of the career mode and the introduction of a dogfight mode for multi player mode is planned. The revamp of the career mode will also affect all plane types and also the early ones.
  • Regarding the always online requirement: neoqb is currently checking if there may be adjustments possible which will be a more difficult task to do due to the communication processes in the game (authorisation process, statistics, game update strategy). On the question of the sim being playable in case the neoqb servers are switched off forever there is no clear answer yet.
  • A lot of enhancements to the game are planned. The first step will be a flight recorder which will be introduced with one of the next update patches. It may be possible to get a road map of the future development plans from neoqb, stay tuned.
  • The statistics system will be revamped.
  • The shop payment system will be enhanced. No details yet.

What will not change:
  • A renaming of already created in-game profile names will not be possible due to database constraints.

More information will be available possibly in the next days.

Today the RoF servers will have a downtime for roll-out of the new Patch 1.007. neoqb has worked hard to introduce, additions, improvements and fixes to the game. The RoF Developer's Blog has a new post entry about the new patch. The new patch 1.007 will be distributed automatically by neoqb's update servers when starting the simulation. Patch 1.007 will introduce German, French and Spanish localization, two new planes (Pfalz D.XII and Sopwith Dolphin), a new shopping cart function for the web shop to buy several planes at once, and also many improvements and fixes. Russian users can now transform the digital download demo of RoF into the full version by using Yandex.Money payment system. The price equals the price of two planes plus additional payment system fee.

Red Baron 3D PC Box Cover (1998)
Some days ago the anouncement of purchasing the rights to the Red Baron Series by Damon Slye of Mad Otter Games caused quite a stirr across the Internet. Today some more revelations have been made by Flybert on our forums:

So what it looks like, is when Activision-Blizzard decided to shutter Sierra and abandon most of it's games/rights, they gave back Jeff Tunnell (founder of Garagegames and co-founder of Dynamix) the Red Baron rights, and Jeff passed them on to Damon [Slye].

and …

I've had, for a few years now, the source code for RBII circa rb2_1.5 sans graphics module.

The last one is more a confession than a revelation ;o) But thanks, Flybert, for sharing this with us.

Have a look at our forum thread about the acquisition of the Red Baron Series to find some more information.

Red Baron 3D PC Box Cover (1998)
Regarding the acquisition of the rights to the Red Baron Series I asked Damon Slye of Mad Otter Games about the future of the Series. Here is what he has to say:

It's a little early to release many details. Right now we're looking for the source code to Red Baron, Red Baron II, or Red Baron 3D. I don't know if we will be successful, but we are trying. If we found it, we would update the game to present day standards. I've always believed it's possible to make playable and historically authentic flight games. I would shy away from a pure action game. I have an entry here about this:

"In 1990 I started making historic flight simulations. Our first offering was Red Baron. We decided to make a World War I dogfighting game because biplanes have the best gameplay. Back then simulations tried to either be fun games or realistic simulations, but not both. I thought this was a false dichotomy, so I designed a game that was fun and realistic.

One design goal was to achieve psychological realism rather than documental realism. What I mean is that historical accuracy in a simulation should be measured by how close the player's mental challenges and choices are to the historical pilot's, rather than on how many gauges the aircraft had, where they were located, etc. Statistics and data are best expressed in books and photographs, whereas games are first of all interactive experiences."

Damon

So a successor for the Red Baron Series is planned in the future, possibly based on the original code. There seems to be so much valuable knowledge and work in the source code that starting from scratch seems a rather minor option. I will keep on following this subject and will inform you if there are new revelations.

Red Baron 3D PC Box Cover (1998)
Breaking news! Mad Otter Games has acquired all rights to the Red Baron W.W.I flight simulation series - in particular Red Baron, Red Baron II and Red Baron 3D. Some of the members of Mad Otter Games, namely Dynamix co-founder Damon Slye had worked on the original Red Baron already back in the days when they were employed with Dynamix.

Now there is another part of this story: as the source codes of Red Baron, Red Baron II and Red Baron 3D is missing (Vivendi who bought Sierra Entertainment is reported to not find the code anymore) Mad Otter Games is offering a finder's fee of US-$ 1500 to the first person to deliver the complete source code (the original C or C++ code).

Red Baron 3D - Title Screen - (1998)

Mad Otter games recently has been working on a browser based W.W.I flight arcade game called Ace Of Aces (see our news). I am wondering what they are planning with the rights to the Red Baron Series, if they are going the arcade route like the unlucky successors to the Red Baron Series like Red Baron Arcade or if they are planning to do a high fidelity W.W.I flight sim as they did in the glorious old Dynamix days. Also the question is what they could do today with the source codes for 10 and 18 year old games. I mean starting form scratch would be easier and more promising for a new project.

The first great looking custom plane skins are emerging on the Internet. They can be installed in the game folder but show up only in the single player mode.

The first skin is made by yofloema for the Albatros D.Va and displays the colours and markings of Ernst Udet flying for Jasta 37 in early 1918:

Rise Of Flight - Ernst Udet's Albatros D.Va in early 1918 - Skin and Screenshot by yofloema (27-Aug-2009)

The second skin is made by an unknown author for the Albatros D.Va and shows the colours and markings of Helmuth Dilthey flying for Jasta 40 in 1918:

Both skins are also available for download in our RoF resources subsection. As neoqb does not officially endorse the use of custom skins right now please use them at your own risk.

Here is some news roundup about Rise Of Flight: After patch 1.006 there were some changes to the official Rise Of Flight website. Also neoqb has published very useful Mission Editor Lessons for those of us working on missions. There was no documentation about the mission editor since the game release. Also the Albatros D.III plane is now available in the neoqb web shop.

The Red Baron's Albatros D.III:

Also there is now a demo of Rise Of Flight available. After registration on the Try-Out site you can fly RoF for about 72 hours. There is only one plane available - the SPAD XIII - and some missions to get an idea what the game is like. Of course before one can try out the game it is necessary to install it first ;o) Therefore neoqb has released RoF to the P2P filesharing networks via Torrent. Download the torrent.

There is a new MiniPatch 1.32e for Over Flanders Fields - Between Heaven And Hell although OBD Software wanted to make a break from Phase 3. Seems they can not live without it ;o) Find the patch on the Over Flanders Fields Download Page. It needs to be installed on top of the SuperPatch 1.32 or the other MiniPatches 1.32a through 1.32d.

Changes by MiniPatch 1.32e:
  • Aircraft Weapon loadout fix for strike missions
  • Ground unit settings separated from Ai range in air
  • Extra scenarios added (each pilot nation now has 12-v-12, and 20-v-20 dogfights) probably for good PCs only ;) be very alert when you start :) also enable pilot never dies before flying …
  • Removed option to stop exit to manager when your aircraft is damaged beyond repair. Option not working, currently no fix, if we fix in the future button will return :)

While OBD Software is throwing MiniPatches at us in short intervals, I missed the release of MiniPatch 1.32c. But no problem: today even this was replaced by MiniPatch 1.32d. It can be downloaded on on the Over Flanders Fields Download Page and needs to be installed on top of the SuperPatch 1.32.

Fixes from MiniPatch 1.32d:
  • Flak sound range fixed
  • Flak - changes easy setting to match old flak for those that want the old setting …

Fixes and improvements from MiniPatch 1.32c and also included in 1.32d (as long as not replaced by another fix):
  • QC friendly skill level box fixed (was hidden)
  • Ace Flight Directive bug (caused Ace flight to attack other targets to player target)
  • Removed old flight density option (was incorrect and caused breaking of simulation's "order of battle")
  • New option to allow craft to crash and no immediate exit (default now no exit) 'may' help those with mission outcome issues

Wow, that was a quick one again. MiniPatch 1.32b has been released for download on the Over Flanders Fields Download Page. It replaces MiniPatch 1.32a. From now on there will always be one SuperPatch and only one MiniPatch to apply on top of the SuperPatch.

Fixes:
  • Lower density tree clusters when lower density scenery is selected in workshops (only high density is loaded at the moment irrespective of setting)
  • Reduced Rate of Fire of AA guns - 'RoF' was too high when battles are on the go.
  • Text Colour issue in claim forms (light grey - not clearly visible).
  • Text overlay issue in Pilot Enlistment screen (right hand panel lower).
  • Awarded medals velvet background now displays correctly to hide the photo holder in the debrief screen.

Improvements:
  • Improved Observation Balloon damage model and effect.

As a premiere a first unoffical add on called 'Quick Dogfight Generator' has been released by Gabriel Lazar ('Gabi Laser' on the Forums), who with his earlier add on software 'ReLoad' and 'TViewMP' already managed to introduce TrackIR to Red Baron 3D. 'Quick Dogfight Generator' is a rudimentary quick mission builder mostly for dogfights.

Quick Dogfight Generator is just a first shot and will be improved in the future. Gabi has some plans but an important aid for his work would be a SDK from neoqb (hint, hint).

Wow. Can't go to bed because too much news coming in. Mark 'Winder' Andrews posted some information about the new Super Patch (1.32) which is currently in its beta testing phase.

The Super Patch will include the following:

  1. Revised DM for all craft
  2. Revised FM for Spads esp stall speeds.
  3. Updated lewis gun drum for the most critical fighters
  4. Updated Se5a Loadout location
  5. NEW: Quick Scenarios - jump in and fly missions based on your current pilots nation such as Patrol, Recon, Attack, Escort etc etc about 6 - 8 missions per nation based on a variety of craft and a set of 'generic' squads in the theater for an immersive 'like campaign' experience - you start in the air near the target / objective - perfect for a quickie.
  6. NEW: Invincible check box for Quick Combat and Quick Scenario (on the respective screens) - checking this box on the fly makes your pilot unable to be captured and immortal - note the flight is then never logged irrespective of workshop settings - use this if you just want to mess around but not kill your fave pilot - we still recommend a QC pilot but here ya go.
  7. NEW: Air Start check box for Campaign missions - on the briefing screen selectable on the fly - default is Ground Start at home base. If checked you start in the air near your target with your escort or escortees - great time saver.
  8. NEW: Updated Scenery Model textures.
  9. NEW: Updated Terrain textures.
  10. NEW: Heavy haze weather effect
  11. Other miscellaneous tweaks.

File size 180mb approx. It will contain and supersede all other patches and mini patches.

Release date - TBD.

Additionally to the on-going work on the first Add On for Over Flanders Fields - Between Heaven and Hell the developers from OBD Software are still working hard on improving the sim. A long-time annoyance being the 'test pilot' getting killed in Quick Combat mode and having to be created again every time seems to be history then. Also I wonder WHAT could be improved on THAT terrain? I will keep my fingers crossed if we will see the patch getting released within the next two weeks.

Just learned about the following. Jason Williams, head of 777 Studios the North American publisher of Rise Of Flight made a note about the next patch 1.005 which will be a hotfix for problems spotted after the release of the latest patch 1.004.

Our code team has some feedback after the last patch and has prepared the hot-fix patch version 1.005. We plan to make it available for customers on the next week. It will very little 10 Mb.

In this patch should be fixed several bugs, which was fast-spotted in version 1.004:
  1. MULTIPLAYER: plane debris looks like numerous planes when camera is far away from them.
  2. MULTIPLAYER: when game-server have VPN-type network connection – clients are unable to connect to it.
  3. MULTIPLAYER: when «Debriefing Timeout» was set on significant value (a minute or more) – clients losing their connection to game server when mission is rotating (when debriefing timer is out). Should be re-checked for ingame server and for dedicated server (dedicated config parameter is “delay”).
  4. AI PLANE: bombers are not using bombs for ground attack.
  5. AI PLANE: bombers are attacking only leader of tank group (if tank group make resistance).
  6. INPUT: toggle automatic level flight command is not working (LShift+A).
  7. GUI: when ASPECT RATIO is very wide (MatroxTH2GO systems) – briefing and debriefing map have no background at left and right.
  8. GUI: only 3 error windows may be displayed simultaneously, not more.
  9. GUI: password on login screen should have no limitation for symbols.
  10. GUI: randomly wrong color of side-screen target markers.
  11. GRAPHICS: “flying” cars and trains, camera and planes falling under the ground.

There must have been a lot of users who found bugs very quick as the patch 1.004 was released just yesterday.

Aerosoft, RoF publisher for Europe, made available the English download version of the box. It costs EUR 37.95 vs. the DVD boxed version which costs EUR 39.99. European customers can buy it in the Aerosoft Online Shop here. Also American customers can buy it in the Aerosoft Online Shop via this link.

Just a heads up. Astonishingly the American download version is also distributed by the European publisher.

neoqb game producer Albert 'Loft' Zhiltsov made a new entry in the RoF Developer's Blog talking about the improvements made for the new patch 1.004 which will be distributed automatically when starting the sim.

The improvements contain a reworked game interface, the in flight map which is now scaleable, a newly introduced (multiplayer) text chat system and one of the most anticipated things: the possibility to host an online server behind a router with network address translation (NAT). Also work on the statistics system has been started to keep track of user data on neoqb's server. Another improvement has been made on the game AI (artificial intelligence). Among other things some optional helps for plane control have been implemented.

On the side of planes there will be two new ones available this week: the British SE.5 as well as the German Pfalz D.III.

It seems, work is progressing well on the sim and the developers are working hard on the improvements.

There is a lot of interest in the W.W.I flight sim genre lately. More and more people getting the hang of it and more and more people returning back from their self-chosen time-out. In the following I will explain why I think that the future for us W.W.I flight simmers is bright:

During the last decade we did not have a variety of options to live our hobby. There was the all time classic Red Baron II/3D which to date still lives thanks to a great modding community but all enterprises to invent the genre newly have gone down the drain. Promising private efforts like 17 Hours and Birds Of Prey as well as corporate ones like Knights Over Europe - to name a few - did not finish. Others as Wings Of War did not live up to our expectations as they turned into arcade titles.

Being a niche within the flight sim genre which in turn also is a niche in today's gaming industry W.W.I flight simulations were totally neglected by the big development studios and publishers. It took the efforts of small teams as OBD Software or small companies as ThirdWire or neoqb to produce quality products the W.W.I flight sim community would consider an addition to and worthwhile for their hobby.

Astonishingly the approach of each development team was very different. OBD Software for example - being a group of people scattered literally about the whole world - managed to produce a historical accurate and immersive Total Conversion of Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 3. It took them countless hours of work and three iterations to overcome the weaknesses and shortcomings of a meanwhile seven year old game engine and even improve on it without having the code. Looking at the result you would never think the game was based on CFS3 (see my review of OFF Phase 3.

Over Flanders Fields (Phase 3) - The Kaiser's Tree is Kaput ;o) - Screenshot by Jim Miller (22-Jul-2009)

First Eagles on the other hand is more or less a sim that lives by the careful project management of a one-person-company having to cope with very slim budget and human resources and hiring people only for very special jobs to be done for this sim. Also First Eagles is sort of a spin-off of a whole series of flight simulations mainly focused on military jet sims. See also an article about ThirdWire's business philosophy. Because First Eagles offers enough possibilities for third party mods and add ons due to its open architecture it has a strong group of followers.

With a brand new W.W.I flight simulation just released by a small start-up company called neoqb another opportunity for us W.W.I flight simmers arose. But not only the game engine with spectacualr visuals and physics was made from scratch also Rise Of Flight's business model is different. While starting with a very basic content - similar to First Eagles - additional planes have to be bought by the player to expand his sim experience further. Also an expansion of the sim environment step-by-step has been announced.

Rise Of Flight - Fokker D.VII and SPAD XIII - Screenshot by neoqb (25-Jul-2009)

And also there are other efforts though still to prove successful: Canvas Knights is a modding project to set up W.W.I on Maddox Games' highly appreciated W.W.II flight simulation Il-2. See also the my interview with the developers. A first release may be published this year. Another project is EAW W.W.I built on the somewhat older engine of Microprose's W.W.II flight simulation European Air War. But a third private effort Richthofen's Skies experienced a slow-down as the underlying Targetware game engine in its newest version has been delayed for release.

Finally there is FS W.W.I in its latest incarnation of Plane Pack 5. A lot of fun can be had with this Total Conversion of Parsoft's W.W.II flight simulation Fighter Squadron: Screamin' Demons Over Europe.

Of course older titles like all-time classic Red Baron II/3D have gotten into the suction of the newer W.W.I sims. A once very strong community like the Red Baron gamers which had a love/hate relationship to 'their' game, its shortcomings as well as its self-discovered modding possibilities and which were always waiting on the 'second coming' if W.W.I flight sims is slowly draining off through the new possibilities now offered.

If you followed me that far you will see why the future for us W.W.I flight sim 'nerds' is bright, brighter than we could have hoped during the last decade. It is only the second time in history of W.W.I flight simming we have such manifold possibilities to pursue our hobby and we should not miss the chance to do so by supporting the efforts of the various developers by buying their products.

But beware: may flight sim 'X' have these disadvantages and shortcomings and flight sim 'Y' others we should never forget that there will be no perfect product, no 'one sim to rule them all'. We should not attack each others in flaming wars about W.W.I flight sim 'X' or W.W.I flight sim 'Y' as recently seen on the various message boards. We should never go that far to insult each other. With an average age of our community members far higher than in any other computer gaming genre we should have more mature levels of ethics and discipline than other gaming communities. We should cultivate tolerance and constructive communication from gamer to gamer and from gamer to developer and vice versa and take this opportunity we currently have as we may never have another.

I am confident that this can happen and with all those possibilities described above the future for us is bright …

Salute!

neoqb has opened the Rise Of Flight store for the public. Now the additional planes for the simulation can be bought. The add on planes go by the price of US-$ 7.62 (= EUR 5.45) each. Currently on offer are Albatros D.Va, Fokker D.VII, Nieuport 17.C1, Nieuport 28.C1, SPAD 13.C1. Each plane is presented nicely on an own page. But why the Fokker D.VII and SPAD XIII can be bought also escapes me as they are already in the release version of the sim.

The RoF webstore can be found here: RoF Store.

Seems only credit cards are accepted right now. The payment will be handled by the internet payment service provider Chronopay based in Netherlands via encrypted SSL data transfer protocol.

About two months ago I decided to upgrade my Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar stick and throttle combo with modding parts. Therefore I acquired the U2Nxt custom gimbals for the stick and also the appropriate Hall Sensors for throttle and stick. Now after two months of use of my modded HOTAS setup you can read my review about those modding kits now. Enjoy.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

OBD Software's Mark 'Winder' Andrews posted some information about the next patch V1.32 for Over Flanders Fields which will be a reconciliation of the main V1.30 patch and both additional mini patches. This work probably will be done next week. Also the damage model work of OBD Software with the two optional damage models and also the two damage models by both modders Fortiesboy and Herr Prop-Wasche will be melted into one damage model to reduce the amount of work for maintaining the various files.

Some improvements that will come with patch 1.32:
  • Environmental Sound Fix.
  • XDP/DM rationalisation.
  • Auto and Manual Online/Offline craft config management to ensure online connectivity by amending some features after some feedback from the MP guys now and then it will be made available as part of the V1.32 patch.
  • Miscellaneous craft fixes e.g. Spad stall speed, Se5a loadout locations etc etc.

This is only a short list. As there will be more features a full list will be made available during the release of patch 1.32.

I talked to Aerosoft the European publisher of Rise Of Flight and asked for a statement about the European release schedule.

  • The English language boxed version is already in production and should be delivered by the end of next week.
  • The English language download version will hit the market by 1st of August. It is planned to release the German language boxed version by the end of August
  • Also there are plans to have French and Spanish language versions ready in September 2009.

All those versions can be bought through the Aerosoft Website.

That's good news for us European based W.W.I flight sim buffs to have the possibility to buy the sim in Europe soon and also to have the variation of four different languages. But also beware anything can happen and delays are always possible.

I will keep you informed.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

Fortiesboy and Herr Prop-Wasche have made available two different damage models for OBD Software's W.W.I flight simulation Over Flanders Fields.

Fortiesboy's campaign DM 1.0 is a DM based upon OFF's hardcore damage model, with individual "threshold value" adjustments to each aircraft type in order to produce enhanced damage effects. This DM is intended to be used by players who fly with "full realism", i.e. normal bullets, full realism FM, and limited flight aids.

Herr Prop-Wasche's damage model is roughly "halfway" between the easy and hardcore damage models already released by OBD Software. The hit points of the aileron cables, ailerons, and wings were changed so that these components are now roughly 75% as strong as they were in the hardcore DM. I believe this results in somewhat more varied and believable aircraft performance when damaged than currently seen in either the normal or hardcore damage models.

Both Damage Models are available for download here on Wings Of Honor in the Over Flanders Fields resources subsection

Red Baron 3D PC Box Cover (1998)
RAF C.K. Benge e-mailed us a short report about the latest Red Baron 3D Event: the Battle Of Somme.

The Battle of Somme Reenactment was fought last weekend.

We had over 30 participants from various RB squadrons in what could very well be the last Red Baron AFM event.

The Allied Forces were victorious in the air however the Central Powers managed to deadlock ground operations. In the end the Germans lost some 40 aircraft in the air and on the ground to the Allies losing 12 aircraft over the two days. The Allies had 3 pilots who became fighter aces, one of them was flying a FE2b (120) recon plane.

It is hoped by all who flew this event that it will be carried on into IL2 1946 Canvas Knights, hopefully next summer depending on how the plane list develops.

Thanks for this report. Although there aren't many new players coming to the Red Baron 3D the events being held by the RB3D Community show us that this W.W.I flight simulation classic is far from dead.

Jason Williams, head of 777 Studios the North American publisher of Rise Of Flight put up a first video of the new to-be-released S.E.5. This plane is right now in beta stage.

Rise of Flight Fans,

Here is a video I made of the SE.5 in action, with special permission from neoqb. For those that have been waiting for this bird here it is. This is a beta flight-model and the code it is flying on is some unoptimized patch code. Some things you see in this video may or may not end up in final code. Matter of fact, there are some things in this build that are purposely broken for devlopment purposes. So don't read much into the code, just watch the beautiful planes. The mission here is the Smackdown mission by Double_Tap, except it has the SE.5 as flyable. 24 planes in the sky to start. The video is slices from several different mission attempts. Unlimited ammo and lots of cheats are turned on to ease my workload. TrackIR 5 in use and this was flown with a late prototype G940 Josytick set-up from Logitech. Mucho fun! Enjoy.

YouTube Video:

The plane should be finished within a couple of weeks and will introduce Great Britain into the sim.

On the Rise Of Flight Developers Blog there is a new entry made by neoqb General Manager Roman Ivanov and RoF Producer Albert Zhiltzov explaining some of the background and recent troubles during introduction of the sim to the market as well as giving a vision for the future. Some snippets:

There comes a time during the development of a product like this where you must make a decision to release it to the public or further delay it. Such a decision is always hard and you have to balance your business concerns with your personal concerns, knowing that there is always going to be something about the product that will disappoint someone, somewhere. We eventually decided that the fun of flying ROF outweighed the bugs and we went to market. We fully realize that some of you were disappointed with some shortcomings or design decisions we made and we apologize of you were not happy with your purchase. We also know that a great many of you are very pleased with your purchase of ROF and we deeply appreciate your enthusiasm for the product and love to hear that you are having fun with it. To those that were disappointed, we want to assure you that we will do all we can to improve the product as fast as we can to hopefully change your mind at some point in the future.

As you are all aware, the ROF design includes a different way of activating, managing and launching (AML) your game than what most flight-simmers are used to. Again, we apologize to those that do not agree with our design, but we would like you to know that we chose this design as a solution to other less desirable options available to us as a developer. Although some in the community do not like our AML design, we hope that the way in which it is utilized in the coming months and years will demonstrate the positive and useful aspects of it and over time our AML design will become an almost transparent part of your ROF experience.

Honestly speaking, developing this product has cost us millions of rubles, dollars and Euros and we need to have a strategy for sustaining ourselves over the next few years if we are to continue our work. Even though we are a "small" developer we still have a good size staff full of coders, modelers, artists and support staff. To be able to continue to develop our engine and produce more quality products for the community we require a steady revenue stream. We concluded that for our niche product to survive we needed a new approach. Flight-simulations are a dying genre in PC gaming and the reasons are pretty obvious to the community. Our approach is not meant to offend, nor is it rooted in greed, it is simply a survival strategy. We hope you understand, even if you disagree with this approach.

Further in the blog there is a plan laid out for the near future and the biggest surprise is that all American and European users will get the two planes Nieuport 28 and Albatros D.V for free starting as of today.

Next week the Nieuport 17 can be purchased at a price of 7.62 US-$ or 5.45 Euro. Also a S.E.5 (or is it rather a S.E.5a?) and the Pfalz D.III are currently in beta test. Isn't the S.E.5 a beauty?

RoF WIP - S.E.5 (10-Jul-2009)

RoF WIP - S.E.5 (10-Jul-2009)

If neoqb maintains the price of 5.45 Euro or 7.62 US-$ then this seems to be reasonable for quality planes comparable to the quality models of the Fokker D.VII or SPAD X.III.

A new MiniPatch (1.31L) has been released by OBD Software. Download it from the OFF patches download page. It will update V1.30c of OFF Phase 3 - Between Heaven And Hell to V1.31L. Attention: other than the previous full patches you need to have Patch V1.30c already installed! Please read the important install notes on the OFF download page before installation of the patch.

Improvements and Fixes in V1.31L:
  • Cloud fix - severe tumbling when in thunder or other heavy clouds reduced to small turbulence! (Now you can fly through clouds with AI in formation!)
  • User FOV settings (Field-of-Vision) for Virtual Cockpit
  • Miscellaneous changes in OFF Manager
  • Reduced Hollywood type yellow explosion effect on crashing craft!

Download:
MiniPatch 1.31L download (10.6 MB)
To be found on:
The Official Patches Download Page
Please read the instructions before installation.

Especially the cloud turbulence was something the CFS 3 engine did mess up. The fix now opens up new possibilities. First reports from users are positive about shaking off enemy AI of your tail when diving into the clouds. The enemy AI seems to loose the player in the clouds that means it can not look through the clouds unlike in other flight simulators.

If you are planning to play OFF MultiPlayer please read this important forum post.

Some words from OBD Software team leader Mark 'Winder' Andrews about what to expect in the near and distant future of Over Flanders Fields.

We have decided to release a mini update specifically for the cloud turbulence 'fix' or should I say reduction in turbulence, as its really an issue that we all want to see put to bed.
We are testing this update now.
If all goes well it should be available within a week - no promises.

Thereafter we will be putting together the first OFF Addon pack and we will release content detail, and pricing etc as we near completion.

To co-incide with the release of the Addons there will be a further OFF update Patch that addresses some other minor issued picked up along the way.

P4 development continues in the background.

Also due to piracy issues it looks like the add on packs for OFF need to be registered via the add on pack order number.

Mathijs Kok from Aerosoft reports that they are "… delighted and proud" to announce that they will be the exclusive European distributor for Rise Of Flight. Aerosoft will also release this product for the Middle Eastern and Central Europe markets.

At the same time neoqb is preparing the release of Rise Of Flight in Europe and also introducing it during various exhibitions and shows.

Aerosoft's main business contained selling add ons for Microsoft's Flight Simulator X. After the demise of Microsoft's flight simulator department taking over the distribution for products like Rise Of Flight could help maintain their business.

According to Jason Williams, head of 777 Studios, the North American release of Rise Of Flight has been delayed until end of this week or early next week. It may well be that the new release date will be the 25th of June now according to GoGamer. Amazon currently lists RoF as being released on 29th of June.

Jason Williams:

Hey everyone,

Due to some unforeseen issues in production of the retail units, the official release of Rise of Flight is delayed a couple more days and won't make the intended June 17th release. We apologize immensely for the delay and want you to know that the delay is NOT related to the actual game code in any way. There were simpy some logistical issues that have held up the initial production run. Everything has been sorted out and production will continue ASAP. The new anticipated release is later this week or early next week.

Many of you have been waiting patiently for Rise of Flight to be released and we appreciate your enthusiasim and support. We believe ROF will be worth the wait.

Again, 777 Studios, the distributor CompuExpert and on behalf of any and all retailers who will be carrying ROF we apologize for the short delay.

Normally the patches for Rise Of Flight are distributed automatically by the neoqb servers if you start the game. So far two patches have been issued for the Russian Release from 7th of May. Patch 1.001 dated 24-Apr-2009 (the Russian master and the release CDROMs were pressed earlier) and Patch 1.002 from 05-June-2009. Patch 1.002 needs to be installed on top of Patch 1.001. For those who have troubles downloading the patches you may download and apply the patches manually but on YOUR OWN RISK.

Download Patch 1.001 (or divided into three pieces)
Download Patch 1.002

Again do this on YOUR OWN RISK and if it goes wrong DON'T COMPLAIN TO NEOQB OR US. Also do not apply those patches on the international sales versions other than the Russian one as they will be released in a newer stage than the Russian release.

Wings Of Honor Title

Currently I am compiling a list of all W.W.I flight simulations including the flight arcade games that had been released for personal computers and home computers on our forums.

I would need some assistance as I may have left out some titles in this list. If you are missing a sim or game in the list or if you found errors please post this in the forum topic and correct me.

This list will be published on our Wings Of Honor website once it is in a 99% complete status.

For all North American W.W.I flight sim fans there is news about where to buy the new W.W.I flight sim Rise Of Flight.

Jason Williams head of 777 Studios which will publish Rise Of Flight in North America:

For those that are asking where to buy Rise of Flight here is where I will post the list.

The distributor is working hard to place ROF in as many retailers as possible in both the USA and Canada.

For those that are not familar with PC game sales it is not a given that a game will be picked up by any or all major retailers. Some major retailers require 90 day notice before a title can be placed on their shelves. It was impossible to do that in this case. And not all buyers at big retail chains care to carry everything. Some believe it or not will say no. I'm sorry if this irritates anyone, but that's the truth.

For those that want ROF as soon as possible, here is where you can currently pre-order Rise of Flight - The First Great Air War.

The current release date is June 17th.

GoGamer.com
Ships to USA adresses

FSPilotShop.com
Ships to USA, Canada and International addresses

Please note the MSRP is $39.99 USD. Each retailer sets their own sell and shipping prices.

Regards,

Jason

The release of Rise Of Flight has been pushed back to 17th of June. Apparently due to organisational issues as RoF was shown the last three days on the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) held in Los Angeles. The distributor CompuExpert had a booth there to show RoF to the American public on a three monitor set up. 777 Studio's Jason Williams was present there to do some PR for RoF.

Also Patch 1.002 is being distributed as of today which contains improvements for the frame rates and new clouds for overcast weather.

Red Baron 3D PC Box Cover (1998)
We received a notification by JGS4_AirSurfer about the 4th edition of the SpeedCup, a fun event where you race W.W.I crates against each other.

Red Baron 3D - SpeedCup Logo

See the notification on our forums.

The rules from the last SpeedCup:
  1. You must fly VERY LOW over A.A. sites, or evade it
  2. All pilots will wait landed at start point
  3. It is completely forbidden to open fire
  4. If you faults the start, you will be eliminated
  5. The race begins when referee's rocket explodes
  6. All planes allowed (NFM) … watch speed and A.A …
  7. If one pilot crashes, he can restart if he want, only from the START point.
  8. Fly under bridges in numerical order. The direction to the bridge is free.
  9. The winner will be the pilot who passes first under the last bridge (bridge 14, west one of two at Bethune).

YouTube Video:

Also there is an information of what is planned by neoqb in May:
  1. To continue our marketing strategy and to make available our project in the other regions and countries. The North America will be the first in this list where our box version will be available on June, 8th!
  2. To upgrade our web service www.riseofflight.com
  3. To release our first patch which will fix known bugs and upgrade to a newer version

Tonight there was a press release by 777 Studios which will publish the new W.W.I flight simulation Rise Of Flight in North America. They aim for a release date right after E3 show on 8th of June but most likely it will be the 15th. The sim will also be presented on E3 show to the public:

777 Studios Logo neoqb Logo

(Redlands, CA) - May 19, 2009 - 777 Studios is proud to announce that it will publish the next-gen PC flight-simulation title Rise of Flight: The First Great Air War from Russian developer neoqb in North America and it will be released in boxed form on June 8th, 2009. Rise of Flight will also be exclusively distributed in North America by CompuExpert and available at major PC game retailers such as GoGamer.com, Amazon.com and others.

Jason Williams, President of 777 Studios, had this to say, "I am thrilled to be representing neoqb and Rise of Flight in North America. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work in partnership with such a dedicated and motivated developer. They have created something special in Rise of Flight and their Digital Nature Engine. Developing a flight-sim of this caliber is a daunting task and they pulled off what very few have. Congratulations!"

Plans to further expand the Rise of Flight experience in the coming months with more flyable aircraft, scenery, objects and features are underway. There are over 160 possible aircraft that could be included in future releases, including bombers, scout planes and fighters. Hurry! Grab your goggles and silk scarf. Enemy planes are approaching!

Download the official press release

Rise Of Flight - PC US Box Cover - Image by 777 Studios (20-May-2009)

There is some more information from Jason Williams, President of 777 Studios:
ROF will not be a Steam title for the foreseeable future from what I understand. If that changes I am sure an announcement will be made by neoqb. There will be a digital version available after the retail release, but I will let neoqb address that. I do have rights to sell the digital version for North America and elsewhere when it is available.

The disk version will be in a cool looking box as you can see, include a good size map of the theatre with a cool poster on the back, a helpful user guide and a keymap with some custom art on the back of that. Oh and the disk of course. :-) The packaging and its contents will be revealed once it's ready.

GoGamer lists the game already for 39.90 US-$. But what about Europe, Asia and Australia?

There is a hint by Jason Williams:
It will be available all over the world in short order I am sure. I don't know the Euro release date. Sorry guys. neoqb will have to speak on that.

Ok, now we need neoqb to say something too ;o)

A very small development team (two developers) called Bundsoft announced a new W.W.I air combat game named Dicta Boelcke. From the description one could read that it is a fun oriented flight simulation with proper physics but not a die-hard flight simulation. It will offer first person and third person views. It is planned to release it for Windows, Linux and Play Station Portable (PSP). In the multiplayer mode a mixed user base with all three plattforms will be able to play with and against each other.

Some older screens:

Dicta Boelcke WIP - Third person view - Screenshot by Bundsoft (05-May-2009)

Dicta Boelcke WIP - Third person view - Screenshot by Bundsoft (05-May-2009)

Here is the full anouncement:

Greetings,

Dicta Boelcke is a flight pseudosim with an interesting alternate-history campaign set in the great war. Developed by the two-man team "Bundsoft," Consisting an Astrophysicist honours student and a Digital art student - Of which I am the visual artist, and my good friend Hernan is the programmer.

I know a lot of you on the forum are realism fanatics. Let it be known we aren't trying to compete with games like Rise of Flight, but our aim is to create something playable on many systems including handhelds and outdated PCs (meaning we wont be using models with tens of thousands of polygons), with a nice campaign that can be played co-op. The best part is we're not going to charge for it.

Be aware that it's been under development for only a couple of months, and the visuals still have a bit of room for improvement.

In it's current state we have basic flight physics (though, yet to be tweaked per-machine) Working multiplayer, and the foundations of a particle system.
Our plans for the immediate future include a damage model enabling us to damage individual key areas of enemy machines, and some nice sound effects including engines (of course) wing stress sounds and turbulence.

Our plans for the final product include nice, animated first person views as well as our current third person, A campaign so you can shoot down hordes of the hun (or the englishman) with your comrades, and a few "free" multilplayer modes like free for all, team deathmatch, balloon busting, you name it.

I'm in contact with two aeronautical engineering students and we will be trying to ground a lot of our physics model in documents which they are providing for us. Anyone on this board with similar material they'd like to share would be quite helpful.

Myself and Hernan would love to hear what this forum thinks of our project. We're open to any criticisms, provided they aren't contrary to our aims, which are
-create a simple portable flight game which will run on somewhat "primitive" hardware
-be the first to inject some characteristic flair into the ww1 genre, with a sophisticated alternate history storyline and some nice customisation options.
We're also very interested to hear any questions you might have about the project. Who knows? You might bring up something we've never even thought of yet.

We believe that great war aviation is a premise which has not been explored to the fullest, and feel that we will leave the intense simulation to games like Rise of Flight, while hopefully filling our own niche.

Bundsoft hope you like our work,

-Harry

Red Baron 3D PC Box Cover (1998)
Now that is a turn-around! There is great news for the Red Baron II/3D Community as website owner Chevelle announced that Wings Of Valor will stay online. There will be a change to a new yet undisclosed owner in short time. The transition has begun already.

I am pleased to announce that WOV will remain open after my departure. The website will remain largely intact. Any changes will be made by the new management slowly over time. If all goes well, the transition should be smooth and with very little down time.

I am very glad that WOV will remain and be in the hands of someone that will give the site the attention that it deserves. I am sure that WOV will be a better site to serve the Red Baron community.

No, this isn't like Brett Favre unretiring. I am truly moving on to my Hudson Flier project but it looks like WOV will live on.

After several meetings held in a top secret bunker where I was subjected to "enhanced interrogation" techniques, I finally relented. I have agreed to turn over WOV to a special operations syndicate. They know where my family lives and I am under strict instructions to not to disclose too much information at this time.

All seriousness aside, I am very pleased that someone has stepped up to take on the responsibility of serving the RB community by taking over WOV. They are enthusiastic about the new opportunity and have some nice plans for this site and for ways to keep Red Baron alive.

The transfer of the site has already begun. I will begin pruning the forum in preparation for moving it to the new location. That move will be the last step in the process. If all goes well, the forum should be down for little more than a day while the DNS servers pick up the new IP for the site.

That's all I'll say for now. The new owner will announce his plans in his own time.

Salute!

WOV Administrator

This comes unexpected as the announcement of the withdrawal sounded final. But it is great that Wings Of Valor - the long-standing site for the Red Baron 3D Community - stays alive. I wish the new site administration good luck for their endeavour to bring Wings Of Valor forward.

CamelJock has posted a list of the current Red Baron II/3D meta servers for the multiplayer part of the sim on our forums. Thanks, CamelJock.

As Vivendi (Sierra) switched off the meta servers half a year ago there are privately run meta servers which IP may change from time to time. The meta servers are a sort of 'phone book' for the Red Baron II/3D client where it will find enlisted game servers for online play.

Red Baron 3D PC Box Cover (1998)
Sad news for the Rd Baron II/3D Community. After eight years website owner Chevelle announced to close down Wings Of Valor because he has a new interesting project going on:

Salute my friends.

Yes, it is true. It has been a long time, an eternity in cyber years, but the time has finally come to have WOV evaporate into the cosmic ether.

Why? Well as you all know I haven't exactly been active here. I can't remember when I last fired up RB3D. It was at least two computers ago. I have moved on to an adventure that is truly the opportunity of a life time. What started out as a simple trip to a local museum has ended up with me being a central figure in the construction of a full scale flying replica of a 1910 Curtiss Hudson Flier. But more about that later.

I have decided to close WOV so that I can use this hosting account for a website dedicated to the Hudson Flier project. It really didn't make much sense for me to start up another hosting account.

I can't give you an exact date but WOV will remain until at least June 1st. Given all the work I have to do, it could even be many weeks after that but that day is coming. When I know the actual date, I will post it.

When WOV goes, it all goes. The new site will not use the same name. The new site will have nothing to do with RB. It will have a blog for a chronicle of the building of the Hudson Flier and its 1/4 scale duplicate. Maybe a webcam. A forum, history of the plane and other stuff. When that project is over, a new project will be added, the building of a model of the 1910 AVRO Triplane (and possibly a full scale).

So there you have it. I hope this is enough advanced notice.

I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed hosting WOV. I learned a lot about a lot of things (unfortunately not how to fly any better) and I have no regrets, none.

I hope you all continue to enjoy Red Baron and/or which ever of the new Sims that are coming out.

Salute!

It is sad to see such a long-standing website going away. Wings Of Valor was founded in 2001 after our own site Wings Of Honor - which is endorsed by Sierra to be the official Red Baron II/3D site - was closed down temporarily and since then was THE important hub for the Red Baron II/3D Community. Our Kudos goes to Chevelle and we wish him all the best for his future.

Our site offers also forums for Red Baron II/3D since its founding in 1999. If you want to continue sharing informations and such please be our guest and feel free to register on our forums.

Neoqb has made a new blog entry on the Rise Of Flight Developers Blog. A thank you to the beta testers:

So it is about time to say good bye for now. Tonight at 00:00 UTC we will complete our extended beta testing of "Rise of Flight". Our time for beta testing is almost over, and we are ready to bring our very first flight sim to the market. First of all we would really like to thank you for everything you have done for the project. We appreciate your help! Sure not everything will be fixed before the release date, but every little detail became visible and it will be fixed in the nearest future. The beginning of sales is not the end of work (it is the real start) and we will update and fix our project. First of all "Rise of Flight" is a platform which will constantly develop, and many thanks to all of you for the help in its birth. Despite a difficult situation in the world, we believe in optimistic forecasts and we will use the best efforts to improve the project, we hope it will successfully pass all tests (which will come in plenty) and bring pleasure to its users.

Also there is a user made video of a multi player coop mission made by beta tester [RS]Wedge:

On 7th of May the sale of Rise Of Flight will start in Russia and other CIS countries. According to the blog entry the sale for the US market will start about one month later. That is good news for Western countries.

Being part of the beta test myself I have to note that there will be continuous improvements of the sim after its release. I enjoyed being beta tester and I wish neoqb all the best for the market start.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

Another MiniPatch has been released by OBD Software: Version 1.30c. Go grab it from the OFF patches download page. It will update V1.30 or higher of OFF Phase 3 - Between Heaven And Hell to V1.30c. Attention: other than the previous full patches you need to have Patch V1.30 or 1.30b already installed!

OBD Software Notes:
If you have V1.28a or earlier: You need BOTH of these installed. So install 1.30 then 1.30c. If you have V1.30 or later already installed: Download the 1.30c minipatch and apply that. In any case, after installing 1.30c minipatch, you WILL need to reapply the Hard Core DM patch if you use it.

  • Ground fire "Realistic" setting renamed to "Hard". Normal is recommended realism

  • Parabellum gunner accuracy fixed (was not variable and too accurate)

All Aircraft Arcade Banner (2008)

I just found out that the IL-2 Mod known as 'Over Oleg's Fields' today had an official name change to 'Canvas Knights'. Also I was informed by team member von Deutschmark that the Mod is now an official project by the AAA Team (All Aircraft Arcade). The name All Aircraft Arcade will ring a bell for most of you who have been flying in Maddox Games' IL-2 W.W.II flight simulation.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

Mark 'Winder' Andrews from OBD Software gives a short preview about the future of the W.W.I flight simulation Over Flanders Fields (OFF).

Guys we are completing the last mini patch for P3 (1.30c) and it will cover:

  1. Reduced AA effectiveness across the board
  2. Reduced rear gunner effectiveness across the board
  3. Reworked realism ratings to allow 100% rating with some gunnery, wind or fuel mixture tweaks not reducing it below 100%
  4. Slightly reduced AI gunnery range

And so to the future:

OFF sales have not been spectacular so we are unsure of a P4 but we are looking at some addon scenarios: additional craft and squad packs etc.
No timescales or concepts have been solidified as of yet.

I hope those that have supported us are enjoying the creation of WW1 air combat as we have seen fit to render it!

Best

WM

Over Flanders Fields is on sale since three months now. The level of support from OBD Software has been unsurpassed. There was a steady flow of patches since the release. All valid customer complaints have been addressed by the developers. If you are unsure what Over Flanders Fields is or what you could expect from this W.W.I flight simulation then read our review here on Wings Of Honor. Also in the OFF section here under 'Articles' you will find more information.

IGN has put up two game trailers for Rise Of Flight with English caption. The one trailer we posted yesterday called 'One Winner' and another one called 'Physics Trailer' which was part of the Canadian review video we posted on Thursday. It shows an overview over the Physics Simulation Engine of the game.

On the neoqb YouTube channel a new video was posted today. It is the game trailer for Russia. Have a look at it for more footage of the simulation.

YouTube Video:

Also there is a new entry in the RoF Developer's Blog talking about distribution fo the simulation and pricing. Interesting is that there will be a limited edition of 15,000 jewel cases and 2,000 unique Collector's Editions but for Russian and CIS countries only (see list of CIS countries). Seems that after those editions are sold out that the game can be purchased via digital download only (for Western countries also). There is also a link to the review video we posted yesterday.

As I noticed on the ND Games website (Google translated version) the price for the Rise Of Flight Collector's Edition has been set to 1400 Roubles (= 33 Euro). Note: ND Games is the distributor for Russia, the simulation is called War in Heaven - 1917 for the Russian market. Only for Western markets the sim will be called Rise Of Flight.

The Collector's Edition will include:
  • DVD Game The War in Heaven - 1917
  • Colorful user manual
  • Club card with activation code for game
  • Badge with the game logo
  • Exclusive content - access to a Nieuport 17 fighter plane out of the Russian production

Just as a clarification: this Collector's Edition is for the Russian Market.

There is a very interesting video of Rise Of Flight from Canadian television where you can see many details you haven't seen before in videos of RoF. Unfortunately (for me) it is in French but at least the pictures speak for themselves. As it is coded in MP4 format you need either Apple Quicktime installed on your PC or Windows Media Player with the appropriate video codec installed separately.

There some some views of the game interface, an in game HUD, some detailed cockpit shots with the working control instruments and for the first time a short scene with bad weather. The last third of the video contains very interesting shots of a game editor of some sort. Looks very sophisticated to be just a plain mission editor. Maybe an internal game design tool.

Maybe some of our French speaking visitors could enlighten us of what the moderator has to say. There is a Rise Of Flight section on our forums. Please leave comments there if you find out more. Thanks.

Edit: Cold_Gambler over at SimHQ was so kind to sum up the first 3rd of the video:

Quick & slapdash translation of video:

  • These are just images from alpha; the moderator has received the beta but didn't have a chance to get any of the images from it for the show
  • The flight model is "a little complicated" but you can simplify things by applying avionics and autopilot (acknowledges that these things did not exist at the time)
  • He compares it to IL2 with respect to the attention to detail regarding the external model, flight model and cockpit details
  • He notes that "ratés de moteur" (engine skips) and carburator starvation can be disabled
  • He remarks upon the high level of detail of the ground units
  • The damage is hyper-realistic
  • Asked "can you play with a keyboard?" (laughs) You can but really need a joystick
  • Then he talks about the slideshow of atmosphere and aircraft components, but the slides are in English so no need for translation
  • Didn't get a chance to fly in clouds (?) but rain on the goggles actually limits visibility
  • He indicated (as we know) that it is now in beta, with squads doing testing.
  • Will this be on any consoles? Doesn't seem likely, they're are new Russian company, so PC only for now
  • When will this be in stores?
  • It's in beta now, so probably not before the end of the summer … maybe the fall … it's really impossible to say

Thanks, Cold_Gambler

There is now a so-called MiniPatch available for download on the OFF patches download page. It will update V1.30 of OFF Phase 3 - Between Heaven And Hell to V1.30b. Attention: other than the previous full patches you need to have Patch V1.30 already installed!

OBD Software Notes:
You need BOTH of these installed v1.30 then v1.30b … however if you already have v1.30, then all you need is the minipatch (nice small download!).
Loading 1.30b if you have 1.30 already will not affect any DM optional patch that you have installed.
If you have any earlier version installed then you need both files. Install the main 1.30 patch then the 1.30b minipatch. Then install any optional damage pack.

Improvements and Fixes in V1.30b:
  • Save Pilot dossier error on claims greater than 5
  • Minor issue with pending claims
  • Nose down attitude when using easy/medium FM

Accidentally I stumbled upon an entry in the ND Games Forum (post #13, Google translated version) which led me to the official announcement (Google translated version) of an Rise Of Flight Collector's Edition. Just as a clarification: this Collector's Edition is for the Russian Market.

Rise Of Flight - War In Heaven 1917 Collector's Edition (31-Mar-2009)

On a closer look it struck me that the information says Game The War in Heaven - 1917 will go on sale in May 2009. That means the April release date - which was unrealistic anyways because of the Beta Test which just has started - will be postponed to May at least for Russia. When Rise Of Flight will see the light of day in Western countries is not known to date as a publisher for those countries has not been announced by neoqb.

Oh, and BTW: a (closed) forum for the RoF beta test has been set up.

There is a new entry in the RoF Developer's Blog with an announcement of a closed RoF Beta Test made by neoqb team member TopGun. TopGun will organize the beta test and has written the rules and regulations for taking part in the beta test on the blog. Only members of online squadrons which esxist for at least one year are allowed to participate and understandably it involves signing a Non-disclosure agreement (NDA). There are more ruels and a procedure for the application so head over to the RoF Developer's Blog and read yourself.

In my opinion the requirement to be a squadron member rules out a lot of experienced W.W.I simulation enthusiasts who never were part of a multiplayer squadron. But those are the terms.

Deadline for applications is the 6th of April 2009 and I wish you good luck with your application.

RoF developer neoqb is raising the recommended system specs again. The system specs have been revised last year in November (see here). The initial specs were published in September 2008 (see here). Instead of a dual core CPU the recommended ystem specs now should sport a quad core CPU. This was unoffically stated by one of the developers (VikS?) some time ago but now it is official.

New recommended system requirements
  • Platform: PC
  • Operating system: Windows® XP (SP2)/Vista (SP1)
  • Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad 2.6 GHz
  • RAM: 3 Gb
  • Hard disk: 8 Gb
  • Videocard: 768 Mb, compatible with DirectX 9.0c, with support of Pixel Shaders v3
  • Audio: compatible with DirectX 9.0c
  • Access to the Internet: 256 Kb/s
  • Joystick: compatible with Direct X 9.0

I bet some people who did rebuild their system in anticipation of the release will have to think about their system again. But also I think the sim will run on dual core systems o.k.

Also I noticed that the Russian Game Publisher ND Games is taking pre-orders as you can see on the right hand-side of this webpage (attention: Google translated page, Russian original here). You can see also the price difference between the digital downloadable version (499 Rubles) versus the boxed version (899 Rubles).

Rise Of Flight Logo
As a reaction to the ongoing discussions about having to go online even for the single player part of Rise Of Flight the newest entry in the RoF Developer's Blog is talking about the reasons and the advantages.

Albert 'Loft' Zhiltsov, Gaming Producer:
Today we will tell you about what is 'Rise of Flight' in a real life. First of all I would like to begin with telling you what it's actually not, it's not your just another 'CD' with game on it.

Rise Of Flight will be a flight simulation with ongoing development relying on the online play. Also the automatically downloaded updates will provide the users with a common base, bug fixes and improvements. Statistics of the users of the multi player environment can be seen worldwide. Note: it was speculated about this being true also for single player mode. This is excluded by the developers: At any time and any game server (multi player or career mode) your statistics will be counted and shown in statistics worldwide (except singleplayer mode). Also for users the possibility of earning some money by providing the community with self-developed add ons is mentioned. This was mentioned also about half a year before. Read the full blog entry here.

Also this bit of information is interesting:
Just a small notice for everyone with traffic or internet connection problem. For "career mode" or "singleplayer mode" you will only need connection to start up or end up your mission (for your statistics). The rest of the time basically you don't have to be connected to the internet. 3-4 hours play traffic will equal to one downloaded page on our blog. In "multiplayer mode" you should be connected to the internet at all time.

That confirms the speculations about needing an internet connection also for single play even if it is only needed for transferring some data on the beginning and the end of a single play session.

What do you think?

Today's entry in the RoF Developer's Blog made by neoqb team manager Loft is about the graphical user interface (GUI) of the game.

Interface is very important! With this video's help you can see how the interface will look like in 'Rise of Flight'. And also you are able to find out more about our rewards. By the way pay a special attention to a 3d scene with Eddie Rickenbacker's plane Spad XIII in hangar which is shown in the main menu.

Though the screen text is in Russian and the interface seems to be not finished you get an impression of the sim's GUI. Especially the part with the Login after the game startup. Also the medals could be part of the online reward system.

There is also a YouTube movie coming with the blog entry:

OFF Development Team leader Winder just let us know that the official OFF forum will be moved from Sim-Outhouse to OBD Software's own dedicated webserver.

Preceding that announcement was a note by Sim-Outhouse Forum administrator Ickie who found a weird explanation to kick the OFF Team as well as its forum visitors from the Sim-Outhouse OFF Forum. A lot of people who contributed to the annual server bandwidth fund are now upset by this move. Saying that it was not known that OFF went payware seems a little bit strange given the fact that this was announced over one year ago on the Sim-Outhouse OFF Forum and there were a lot of talks about it. The OFF community is puzzled (to put it mildly) about such an incidence. Also to deal with this issue in the public instead of taking it to personal messages is a strange behaviour.

OBD Software seemed to anticipate the move hence they have made preparations for their own forum but they are not ready with it. You will find it here in the news when the new OFF forum is opened or watch the Over Flanders Fields Website for an announcement.

The game will require an online account to play. Even offline. They promised that traffic in case of offline play will be minimal and even a crappy dial-up line will do. Add-ons and updates will take up to 200mb, but are planned to eat about 50mb on average.
The whole thing will be a bit like Steam or Battlefield or some MMOG - you buy a box or order it online, then you can go to their store and buy planes for much smaller sums. Or rather the right to fly those planes. E.g. there may not be a flyable SE5a in the box release, but you might see AI or other players online fly them - to get yourself into its pit, you'll have to pay.
Also if a dedicated modders group decides to work with them and makes a plane of proper quality, they can put it up in store, sharing profit. They told me OFF team was really interested.

There aren't many guns options. Amount of ammo, gun convergence. They told me they thought of adding adjustable pich for guns but then decided it could leave new players confused.

Too much RoF updates lately ;o) This time it's a possibly delayed Thursday's RoF Developer's Blog Update. In a multiplayer dogfight neoqb team members VikS and Loft go up against each other in a Fokker D.VII vs. a SPAD XIII. The dogfight looks exciting with the planes turning and going vertical. Also Immelmann turns are demonstrated by both.

High Quality (HQ) version:

Standard Quality version specially for Mogster:

In the end you can see a glimpse of a Jagdstaffel with at least 13 Albatros D.V in proper V-formation.

SimHQ's Doug 'guod' Atkinson has published an exclusive preview on the upcoming W.W.I flight simulation Rise OF Flight by neoqb. It is an extensive and unbiased preview with lots of screenshots and videos. Although he had an early built of the sim for this preview you can get an impression of what you could expect in the final release of RoF. The sim surely has made some progress since this early built and it said to be released in spring 2009.

RoF Preview - Spad XIII - Screenshot by SimHQ / Doug 'goud' Atkinson (27-Feb-2009)

This is finally a first-hand information from the user's point of view after all the speculations on the internet. Head over to SimHQ and read the whole preview to find out what RoF could bring to you.

P.S. I should point out that Red Baron and Red Baron 3D were not products from Microprose as mentioned in the article but from Dynamix / Sierra ;o)

Especially the last few seconds of the movie are interesting when one of the planes gets moved by the blast wave of the detonation.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

The Over Flanders Fields Development Team has just released Patch 1.2 for OFF Phase 3 'Between Heaven And Hell'. The team was working hard during the last weeks on squashing some bugs. Also the community was informed nearly daily about the progress. Also support for users was still going on. The patch contains a lot of fixes and improvements.

Improvements and Fixes in V1.2:

  • New Claims options added (see Workshop) for easier claims (less realism factor)

  • 'Home Field' error expanded to assist non English OS users to get setup
  • Direct to Mission option in Workshops changed - always direct to mission except for CFS3 QC and MP
  • Scattered Clouds skybox smoothed
  • Old CFS3 QC start up cleaned up (no exploders in GUI)
  • Ace Flight waypoints now hidden from CFS3 mission map
  • Bug in Flight Log "next page" fixed - some paging issues may arise if lengthy claims are filled in
  • Leader and Wing Labels added to players flight to aid formation and lead/wingman identification
  • Fe2b Loadout corrected - no anti balloon payload
  • Exiting from Warp and player craft exploding fixed (seen on non-English OS only)
  • N17 Lewis availability in French squads fixed
  • MP fixes (Now MP can be run from OFF Manager tested OK)
  • Brisfit and Fe2b crew size changed to 2 in statistics
  • Gun firing Force Feedback fixed
  • AI targeting improved, and features for possible future enhancement placed
  • Gun spread factors split to main and rear gun categories for individual settings in workshops to aid users (optional) who have trouble fighting 2 seaters
  • MP fixes (OFF Manager able to launch MP properly)
  • FPS improvements (only help PCs that are GPU limited not PCs that are CPU limited - most high end rigs are actually CPU limited in OFF!)
  • Frontline models low LOD reduced to aid FPS over the frontlines
  • DFW set to be a level-bomber
  • Players flight now has to circle the field at least once and maybe twice (altitude dependant) in Campaign missions gaining altitude at start of mission to ensure altitude is reached prior to going over the lines - (Historically correct)

It is safe to install V1.2 over V1.0 or V1.1 it will not affect current pilots, but of course make sure you exit/close OFF MANAGER before running this patch!

Patch download (13.3 MB)

Also there are already plans for more improvements in Patch 1.3.

All Aircraft Arcade Banner (2008)

Over at All Aircraft Arcade - an IL-2 Modding Community - there is a strong interest in W.W.I which resulted in a W.W.I poll to find out how strong this interest is. This led to the formation of a modding team 'Over Oleg's Fields'. Clearly a resemblance to the Over Flanders Fields W.W.I sim and Oleg Maddox' IL-2 W.W.II sim. Currently it is said that this will not be a full mod like Over Flanders Fields but a bunch of add ons to IL-2.

An announcement has been made and the mod team is looking for members. Also work has begun on maps and some planes as Albatros D.III, Fokker E.III, Sopwith Camel F.I and Fokker Dr.I.

There has been a similar project to bring W.W.I into IL-2 several years ago. For more information scroll down the left-hand side navigation until you find the 'Abandoned Projects' category. There you can find some info and screenshots of 'IL-2 World War I'.

FlyXWire has posted some interesting information abour RoF's engine management. He poked around in some Russian message board and translated this information into English:

SPAD XIII

Inline 8 cylinder water-cooled Hispano-Suiza 8Be engine. Transmitting engine power through a reduction drive gearing at a propeller ratio of 2/3rds the engine's revolutions. Power of the engine: 220 hp at 2100 crankshaft RPMs, with a maximum permissible speed of 2200 RPMs.

Power plant management involves the following control levers:
  • the control lever for the carburetor throttle plate (located in the cockpit on the left side, nearer to the pilot) for controlling the engine rotation speed and propeller thrust
  • the lever for adjusting the fuel-air mixture (located in the cockpit on the left side, furthest from the pilot) to control efficient power output at various altitude levels (and to prevent engine stoppages)
  • a control lever for positioning the radiator flaps for engine cooling and proper temperature range (in the cockpit to the left, not visible)
  • the magneto switch (in the left side of the cockpit) to control engine ignition

On the ground the following steps are necessary for proper engine start up:
  1. to position the throttle lever to the idling position (lever moved forward)
  2. to open the mixture lever, without rough running (mixture lever back: [Right shift] - [+])
  3. to close the radiator flaps ([Right ctrl] - [-])
  4. to engage the ignition switch (key [E])
  5. if having failed to start after the 5th attempt, it is necessary to clear the engine by closing the engine levers and turning over the engine with ignition switch on only (using the [E] key twice)

After engine has started the fuel mixture should be leaned (by moving forward the mixture adjustment lever approximately 20%), and to warm the engine thoroughly at a speed not exceeding 1000 RPMs with the radiator flaps remaining closed for approximately 2-3 minutes until the engine runs smoothly (with no fluctuation of the tachometer being noticed). After steady running is established, it will be necessary to open the radiator flaps to ensure proper engine cooling ([Right ctrl] - [+]).

To start the engine in flight it is necessary to maintain sufficient propeller rotation of no less than 150 - 200 RPMs (or restarting may be impossible):
  1. Monitoring the adjustment of the air-fuel mixture must be done during changes in altitude (the greater the height - the leaner the mixture required, i.e., lever moved forward)
  2. Engine ignition circuitry is always controlled by the ([E] key). In-air engine cutoff [required in pro-longed diving] is controlled by the ignition switch (key [E])

Engine operation in flight:

With an increase in altitude during climbing, in order to maintain steady engine running, it will be necessary to lean the fuel-air mixture (fuel lever moved forward, [Right shift] - [-]), while to enrich the mixture [as when descending] (lever moved backwards, [Right shift] - [+]).
For optimum engine power, maintenance of the fuel-air mixture is necessary even in level flight, by sufficiently leaning the engine [for good range], while ensuring the engine does not stop running [or over-heat].
In all cases, except for low-engine operation, the radiator flaps must remain opened ([Right ctrl] - [+]) to avoid over-heating the engine. When operating the engine during idle, it will be necessary to close the radiator flaps ([Right ctrl] - [-]), to avoid over-cooling the engine. Prolonged running of the engine over-cooled or over-heated (especially at high RPMs) can lead to its damage (either partial or to catastrophic failure).

That is interesting news as the developers had not told us about engine management in the simulation so far. Thanks to FlyXWire for posting this.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

OFF Development Team leader 'Winder' shared some insight in the history of Phase 2 and Phase 3 as well as some important information:

For those that have supported us in buying our P3 addon - much thanks.
For those that are new to the scene some info that you might want to know about.

1) P2 has only been pulled from our website as we could no longer afford the bandwidth….

2) Its not legally available on Bit-Torrent as we lose ownership of our software once it is.

3) P2 is still available via DVD swaps and its still free!

Next I want to emphasis the legal side of P2/P3.

1) OFF is an addon - you require a legal copy of CFS3 to install and run OFF - this applies to P2 and P3. OFF is no different to any of the Flight Sim addons that are available on the net.

2) P2 and P3 in themselves are not a complete installation of CFS3 - you require many files from CFS3 for them to work but its done automatically during install (files are copied from your legal CFS3 and are not on our disks). The P3 installer has been totally overhauled.

3) P3 'engine' mods - none of the core exe files of CFS3 have been modded in any way whatsoever - all the 'engine' mods are done in real time in the memory of your computer.

And finally the future - as we have posted so many times: - P4 - more craft - more squads and theaters (England Home defence etc)…

Depending on sales and support of P3 it is our full intention to continue with the above - if OFF support is not there then there is no point in continuing on something that is not required as the hours involved is considerable.

However we are all as keen as ever and if support is there OFF continues ON.

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 Banner (2008)

Over Flanders Fields Phase 3 named 'Between Heaven and Hell' has been released by the developers ODB Software. The development of this W.W.I Flight simulation took 1 1/2 years as Phase 2 was released in spring 2007. The release is long awaited by the community.

This is a total conversion based on Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 3 and there is little resemblance to it anymore. You need the original game though for installation of Over Flanders Fields.

Click to view a larger image

Cost for the OFF BHaH DVD is currently set at $50 US + delivery (+ value added tax if applicable in your country). Shipping will be done by a distributor on behalf of OBD Software. A previous plan to distribute the game via the team members themselves has been dropped to guarantee a faster delivery.

The OFF Development Team (OBD Software) has to be applauded for this great effort which is the preliminary heyday of four years of development.

And while you wait for the game disk to ship you could download the first Official Patch 1.1 containing Sopwith Triplane model updates, several railway stations 1917 fixes, AI and target priority tweaks and ace flight info changes.

After a long period with heavy modelling, texture work, modding and tweaking Plane Pack 5 for Fighter Squadron W.W.I has been released by project leader ArgonV:

"Never before in the flight simulator modding community have so few worked on so much for so little at such a cost."

-ArgonV after pulling all of his hair out over the last 4 years

At last we in the FS-WWI developers group bring you FS-WWI Plane Pack 5. This free add-on to the flight simulator Fighter Squadron: Screamin' Demons Over Europe is a total conversion mod to convert Fighter Squadron (Or SDOE as we in the community like to call it) into a World War 1 flight simulator. The area of conflict takes place mainly in the Somme region of France circa 1914-1918.

With 52 flyable aircraft, two flyable balloons, one flyable Zeppelin, 8 drivable ground vehicles, over 430 Training missions and 185 Campaign Missions to choose from FS-WWI has a lot of content to offer!

Click to view a larger image

The following is a list of instructions to get this mod installed properly. You must have the original game installed fresh before you can get started. In the near future, an All-In-One installer will be released in which you do not need the original game.

Go to the download page and read the the list of instructions for installation

For sure this new release of FS-WWI will be a great addition for the W.W.I flight sims community. Our thanks goes out to the FS-WWI Development Team for their continued efforts to improve this W.W.I total conversion of Fighter Squadron - Screamin' Daemons Over Europe. As mentioned by ArgonV during the last year Plane Pack 5 will be the last package for Fighter Squadron W.W.I. There will be a release of an All-In-One installer soon to make installation easier.

"O.K final announcement"

  1. P3 is completed and is being prepared for distribution.
  2. We will announce a release date shortly
  3. There will be no more postings from OBD Software regarding delivery of OFF until we know the date.

Over on the CombatAce First Eagles Forum peter01 made an announcement that he is working on flight models for the latest Nov 2008 patch for FE. As the complexity of the FM now has raised compared to the games release and former patches it may take a couple of months to finish this task.

Also there are indications that First Eagles may run on Windows Vista 32 Bit (DirectX 9) when the Nov 2008 patch is applied. It seems to depend on the user's PC configuration. Here is a step-by-step guide what you could do to get FE (and the other technically related flight sims made by ThirdWire) to run on Vista if it does not work even with the Nov 2008 patch applied.
