I have posted two new file uploads for Red Baron II/3D.

The first is Greybeard's Best Sound Set made from Steve Fabert's improved game sounds. It can be found in the Red Baron II/3D section under Resources -> Sound Files (direct link).

The second is much to my surprise an improvement of the Red Baron Secure Player game client by Rens Groenewegen which now includes the ability to fill in own meta server addresses as the official meta servers from Sierra have been shut down. You can download this in the Red Baron II/3D section under Resources -> Security Utilities (direct link) or directly from Rens' website.

The official meta servers for Red Baron II/3D are switched off. Fortunately there are some privately operated meta servers for finding multiplayer games. Please adjust your mplayer.ini file in your Red Baron II/3D main game folder by opening it in a simple text editor and replacing the respective section with the following:

[MetaServers]
// Server=TCP:rb2.west.won.net:6001 ; CA Titan Server 216.52.220.23 - not working anymore
// Server=TCP:rb2.east.won.net:6001 ; NY Titan Server 63.251.143.210 - switched on and off intermittently since 06-Oct-2007
// Server=UDP:dyn-meta.dynamix.com:47801 ; Baron Meta Server - switched off since early 2000
Server=TCP:depotserver.de:6001 ; Longarth's Meta Server
Server=TCP:rlgb.xs4all.nl:6001 ; Rens' Meta Server
Server=TCP:66.225.104.67:6001 ; Tiger's Meta Server

The official servers are commented out by the preceding '//'. This should let you find the mulitplayer servers better and faster.

Damon Slye from Dynamix fame (Red Baron, Aces Over Europe, Aces Of The Pacific, …) is about to release a new W.W.I title called 'Ace Of Aces'. To be precise it is Mad Otter Games which is developing the new title.

A message from Damon Slye:
"Ace of Aces is a flight game designed to be fun and easy to play. We captured all the exciting moments from the WWI dogfights, but left out the tedious stuff. You aren't required to start your plane on the runway, take off, and follow navigation points to your mission. Instead, you start in the air, facing the enemy and jump straight into the fray. We believe that we've built a game that is exciting and easy to play, but still captures the essence of WWI dogfighting."

"The game flies great with a mouse -- in fact, we actually prefer the mouse to the joystick!"

From the official game description:
The year is 1916. War rages across Europe. For the first time ever, men will take to the skies in cages of wood and canvas. Far above the trenches soar the aces of the Great War. Little is known or understood about air combat - these pilots must invent the tactics and skills to survive and succeed.

'Aces of Aces' puts you in the cockpit of the biplanes of the Great War. Will you choose to fly for the Allies in the nimble Sopwith Camel or the sturdy SPAD? Or will you fly for Germany, with its more vividly painted aircraft, including the feared Fokker Triplane?

Fly online with or against your friends in multi-player matches, or hone your skills in single-player challenges. Will you excel in the dogfighting tactics necessary to survive and succeed? The best will become Aces, and only the very best will become the Ace of Aces.

Features:
  • Up to 12 players
  • Eight Aircraft on initial release: Spad 7 (free), Sopwith Camel, S.E.5a, Spad 13, Albatros DIII (free), Fokker Triplane, Albatros DV, and Fokker DVII.
  • Maps: Marksmanship training, Ground Attack training, Balloon Madness, Turkey Shoot, Dogfight, Furball, Skirmish, Midheizen, Flak Attack!, and Alpine Alley.

About the developer:
Ace of Aces was developed by Damon Slye, who created the popular and award winning series of flight games that includes "Red Baron", "Aces of the Pacific", "Aces over Europe", "A-10 Tank Killer", as well as many other hit games like "Arcticfox", "Stellar 7", "Mechwarrior", and "Deathtrack".

A first video:

There is an announcement by the devlopers on the CombatAce W.W.I Forums about sign-up for a private Beta. You can find a promotional code there for signing up.

From what I have read and from the looks of the screenshots and the video the game seems to be an arcade game rather than a flight simulation and it also seems to be a browser game. I can not verify this as after signing up for the Instant Action Beta and receiving the confoirmation code I still need to apply for the beta test. Also I had to download an extension for the Firefox Browser called 'InstantAction.com Game Launcher'.

We received a heads-up from FS-WW1 Development Team leader ArgonV regarding Fighter Squadron W.W.I:

"FS-WWI is practical AND fun again!"

"I am of course referring to the Plane Pack 5 release candidate. At least that is what was told to me by a close friend and Beta tester."

"Now with AI that can take off and gain altitude along with a terrain that has many new ground objects, targets, populated towns and things to shoot at/run into plus newly reworked airfields; Plane Pack 5 may well put FS-WWI back on the WWI sim map."

"I am working very hard with terrain Beta testers to finish up Somme as well as working on getting things wrapped up for a Plane Pack 5 release soon after the New Year. With 52 flyable aircraft, two flyable balloons, one flyable Zeppelin, three drivable ground vehicles, 430 Training missions and 185 Campaign Missions to choose from FS-WWI has a lot of content to offer!!! :o)"

Now that are good news. A welcome addition and a further variation to W.W.I flight sims.

OFF Development Team leader Mark 'Winding Man' Andrews posted an important information on the SOH OFF Forums:

"… yes I sent the DVD V1.0 on its way to be published yesterday …"

"Please do not ask how long til availability - its not entirely in our hands … which feels strange."

WM

Now that's something … I got confirmation also by Mark 'Polovski' Rogers and James 'OvS' Romano posted some hints that Phase 3 is close to release. Both members of the development team.

This is telling me: When after that long time of development three team members give out the same information independently form each other then I think Christmas could be much earlier this year.

Source: SimOuthouse OFF Forum

And an update by Winding Man …

"Guys just to let you all know that the P3 V1.0 DVD was sent to the UK for the start of publishing yesterday via speed courier - it arrived today 25hours later - yeah impressive."

"No I have no idea when you will be able to purchase P3 but I can say the product is ready and its AWESOME."

Cheers

There is an entry in the RoF developers' blog made by a visitor called 'dutch'. He was asking about the payment model for the simulation:

dutch          11/22/2008 12:38:06 AM
One question, I'm not shure about this or I miss some info. Will this game be a internetgame like Warcraft, (=paying for playing every mounth and the need of a fast internet) or a standalone like RB, OFF, Il-2 etc.
Dutch

This was answered by Loft, member of the development team:

LOFT          11/22/2008 4:36:30 PM
No. Pay for account, and for planes. And in future for new maps, trains, tanks and other content.

If it wasn't for the interpunction it would read: No pay for account, and for planes … But it reads: No. Pay for account, and for planes …
I read that we do not need to pay monthly fees but we need an account and we need to pay for every add on.

The Thursday development update from neoqb shows a new promotional movie with an in-game training session. The basics of flight are explained very nicely.

The developer's basic idea behind that is not to make the simulator easy to fly but to have training campaigns with training missions to appeal those people who do not have any idea about simulation flying but who are interested to learn it. That is a good approach. And also very nicely done with the animated characters especially with the trainer who should be very familiar to those who are also interested in the history of the first aerial conflict (Eddie Rick… … who?).

neoqb, the RoF Development Team, has made some additions to the sim's key features.

  • The whole western front of the First World War on one map: 125 000 square kilometres of the territory, which have been carefully transformed in digital format from the maps of that period (1917-1918)
  • Take a real copy of planes and land equipment recreated from original engineering drawings
  • New aerodynamic model authentically recreating physics of planes of the First World War and of aerodynamic forces. You get an exciting feeling of piloting a real plane - from a moment of takeoff to a landing
  • New model of damages developed by real parameters of a motor group, a structure of a glider and also various damage levels of a pilot
  • Modern graphics based on the own engine «Digital Nature»
  • Mission editor with different level of complexity
  • Flexible system of customisation of complexity of flights, intelligence of opponents, control of plane systems, navigation
  • Unique system of awards and ratings in a cooperative mode of the game. It is based on a growth of a player competence in the field of game and history knowledge
  • Gameplay is based on the logic of conducting real operations of aviation in that period of time (the World War I)
  • Flexible adjustment of realness of modelling of planes
  • AI uses various tactics depending on task types
  • Opportunity to play intricate plots with the help of the «events» system in missions
  • Animation scenes with characters, whose prototypes are real pilots of the World War I
  • «Career» mode - generated missions on the basis of the historical data about actions of the aviation in 1917-1918. Users can choose a plane type, a regiment and a date with which they wishes to begin their career
  • «Network» mode - a command game mode in which each of parties has fixed objectives simulating real fighting situations. This mode includes filters, various competitive elements and also the united system of statistics which is based on system of «professions» where you can carry out different tasks to get special points
  • Opportunity to buy additional planes and other military equipment and use it in the «Network» mode

'Career' mode seems to be the single player part of the game. Also interesting are the last two items with emphasis on 'network mode'. 'Network mode' means multi player. But does it mean that additional planes to be bought are only available for multi player?

Also neoqb revised the technical specs for PC systems to run RoF on.

  • Platform: PC
  • Processor: Core 2 Duo (Intel) 2.8 GHz
  • RAM : 3 Gb
  • Hard disk: 6 Gb
  • Videocard: 512 Mb video
  • RAM(GF9800 series or AMD ATI Radeon 4850 series)
  • Access to the Internet: At least 512 Kb/s
  • Operating system: Windows XP/Vista (Windows XP requirements can be a little bit less then listed above)
  • Support of 64-bit operating system is not guaranteed by developers

Those seem to be high hardware requirements even when it should be released on the expected time period of first quarter of 2009.

From Mossie, member of the RS Development Team:

"The server supporting RS both live and dev is going to shut down permenatly. Vespa (of TT) has been supporting us in hosting the game and is unable to continue."

"So shortly RS will go off-line."

"No decision has been made about reopening, we have to discuss withtin the Dev Team."

"More news later."

Sad news as this could influence the development process of the sim.

There is an article on gameland.ru with information about neoqb's upcoming W.W.I flight simulation 'Rise Of Flight' or 'The War In The Skies - 1917' as it will be called in Russia.

Click to view a larger image

The article is written in Russian by Alexei Butrin. The author attended the booth at the IgroMir 2008 game convention. Albert Zhiltsov, the project manager was demonstrating the game features to him. Basically what Alexei Butrin is saying in his article is that RoF will cover the last two years of the war 1917 to 1918. It has a single map of 125.000 km² fully reproducing the entire Western Front. One can either choose to fight for Germany and Ausria-Hungary or for the Entente with France, Great Britain, Italy, USA and Russia. There will be a dynamic campaign with missions. The range of missions includes the adjustment of artillery fire, reconnaissance, tracking and intercepting bombers as well as duels withfamous aces of W.W.I.

The game engine called 'Digital Nature Engine' written be neoqb will beresponsible for drawing the terrain with accurate details. THere will be four flyable planes ready for the release date: Albatros D.V, Fokker D.VII, Nieuport 28 and SPAD XIII. The developers cooperated with European aviation museums to get reliable data.

There will be modeling of gestures by the pilots as this was the only way to communicate between two planes in the air. The physics engine will deal with a realistic flight and damage model with the aerodynamic characteristics of all aircraft. The damage model will cope with the single parts ofa plane like airframe and engine parts.

The game was demonstrated on a PC system with Core 2 Duo 2,4 GHz, a GeForce 8800 GT with 256 MB of graphics memory and 2 GB of RAM (a GeForce 8600 series would be the minimum configuration for the game).

The complexity of controlling the planes is impressive although they have lower stall speeds and higher drag than modern planes. There will be animated tutorials and real aces like Eddie Rickenbacker will act as trainers. THere were no AI controlled planes. The planes were just circling. The developers promise witty AI pilots with a variety of combat manoeuvres for the release.

The most interesting information in the article is the claim that neoqb is looking forward to an active flight sim community making campaigns, mods and add ons for RoF with the assistance from in-game editors. Again a release date of first quarter of 2009 is mentioned.

Read an English translation of the article here.

… visits that is ;o)

200.000 visits since March 15th 2002 means 2500 visits per month averaged. That shows us that we can not be THAT wrong with our concept. Also the average number of visits is just … well … average.

Also the number of visits from Oct 7th 2000 when we went online to March 15th 2002 when the visit count started has not been taken into account.

Our analysis shows that the number of visits has raised during the last year. The raise this year has been not as steep though but the W.W.I flight sim community is pretty small compared to communities of other game genres. It is a very steady community with a higher average age of its members. But also younger people are coming to us being intrigued by the era when combat flight began, its technical achievements and historic significance.

Well, I hope you enjoy your visits here and I hope our forums here will be utilized more by you.

Also please leave a message in our guestbook if you want.

Sincerely

neoqb was present at the Russian game convention equivalent to the E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) called IgroMir 2008 from 6th to 9th of November. The first day was for business partners only, day 2 to 4 were for the public. The blog entry is only visible via the Russian part of the Rise Of Flight developer's blog. A translation of the Russian blog entry reveals that neoqb presented Rise OF Flight at the booth of a company called ND Games publicly for the first time. As stated in the blog entry ND Games will be the publisher of the game in Russia. A publisher for the Western countries is not presented yet.

The Russian title of the game will be different from 'Rise Of Flight' as this name translated into Russian does not sound that good. Therefore the game when released in Russia will be called 'The War In The Skies - 1917' (literally translated). The interest in the game was huge.

We received an official announcement from the Over Flanders Fields Development Team:

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the guns fell silent. Cities had been razed, Empires swept away, and almost an entire generation of young men lost in the blood and the quagmire of the trenches and the skies of Europe. After four long and terrible years, the 'War to End All Wars' was finally over. Now, ninety years later, Over Flanders Fields - Between Heaven and Hell, will recreate the war in the air fought so long ago.

What is Over Flanders Fields? In order to answer that, one needs to step back in time 100 years, to a time of Empires, a new age of industrialism, scientific discovery, and the Dawn of Flight. In 1914, the 'War to End all Wars' was about to begin, new machines of destruction were being invented and perfected on a weekly basis, and the world as men knew it was about to change forever. New democracies and ideologies would soon sweep away the crowned heads of Europe; new scientific advances and inventions were rapidly changing the old way of life. OFF brings you to that time. A time when man was new to this machine called an 'Aeroplane'. He took to the air with a sense of wonder and excitement - to explore the world as it had never been seen. That view of the earth was soon filled with the smoke and destruction of war, and soon those early pilots were locked in combat high above the clouds. It was a time of industrialised warfare, but also a time of chivalry, a time when skill and daring and luck might see you survive.

OFF is a flight simulation dedicated to the Dawn of Air Combat. It is a simulation that will bring you face-to-face with the reality of what many young pilots felt in their machines high above the trenches of Eastern France. OFF allows you to not only test your pilot and gunnery skills in close-range Air Combat, but it will allow you to witness the actual war below you. All fronts move, with historical accuracy. Fly alongside historic pilots, in one of 39 aircraft, under the colours of Germany, France, the USA , or the British Empire. Enlist in one of hundreds of Jastas, Escadrilles, and Squadrons spread the entire length of the Western Front. OFF will immerse you in a world long gone: the sights, sounds and memories of the skies over France and Flanders, soaring over the gentle landscapes scarred by the trenches, craters and mud of the Great War.

To sum up, what is Over Flanders Fields? It is a WWI Flight Simulation, designed to immerse you in the world of the Great War. OFF will take you from your chair at home and seat you in your cockpit at The Front. Whether you fly for the Entente, or the Central Powers, OFF will put you in the heart of the action, Between Heaven and Hell … Over Flanders Fields!

An update from Winder, head of the OFF Development Team:

"Just another quick note to say that all is progressing well - much polishing has taken place over the last month and OFF is looking amazing from every aspect - how amazing - well I am sure some of the team will chip in this thread with some screenies or feedback on beta impressions …"

"Its been a long road for all of us - and we are a very small team.
I am sure we are looking forward to release more than you guys - sleep and family time are becoming an issue!"

A 'Work In Progress' update has been posted by neoqb Team member 'Loft' on their developers' blog.

Today it is about recreating the historical cities and destruction of buildings:

"This week I would like to show you a current condition of works on prototypes of historical cities. These cities are very important for modelling of territory of the First World War, and therefore are created separately. Cities include more objects, as well as unique prototypes of historic buildings (cathedrals, castles, etc.)."

There is extended news from ArgonV regarding FS W.W.I. It is a little bit older (from 01-Oct-2008) but anyway here it goes:

In expectation of FS-WWI Plane Pack 5, and to further the completion of the FS-WWI mod for SDOE I have decided to further enhance the Somme terrain in light of Recon3's texture improvements. The list of improvements I have already completed or wish to complete are as follows:
  • Fixed many shading oddities. Some still remain around the airfields and towns however. I'm still looking for a fix for these …
  • Add "fields of battle" to front lines area
  • Remove "invisible ground" that aircraft crashed into or ground objects got placed ontop of (Done)
  • Add a permanent Zeppelin Shed to the terrain (Done)
  • Make the two bridges able to be driven or landed upon (Done)
  • Correct shading on many of the tents, hangars and buildings (Done)
  • Airfield building and hangars are now mostly hi-res (Done - Recon3)
  • Airfield tiles are hi-res (Done - Recon3)
  • Add hi-res support to the terrain (Done)
  • Fix "floating" windmills and lighting issues of the windmill object (Done)
  • Correct the error that the windmills all were either Axis or Allied in the Mission Editor. Now each of the three windmill targets can be set to either/or (Done)
  • Correct all Training Take-off and Landing missions so the Allied aircraft take off on the Allied side of the front and the Axis aircraft take off on the Axis side of the front (Done)
  • Correct all of the airfield AI take off coords and positions. They are now not so randomly placed on the airfields (Done)
  • Create a new Allied and Axis observation balloon object. The placeable object now has a squad or so of men to protect it, a few tents around and you can see the cable ran from the balloon to the ground. The men do fire on enemy aircraft, and they can also be killed or ran over (Done)
  • The above mentioned object has been modified to have a flak gun. These objects are permanent now on the terrain up and down the front lines on both sides. I would not venture to the front so half-hearted now!! (Done)
  • Add balloon bases to all airfields (Done)
  • Add more buildings, houses and trees to the town of Bertincourt (Done)
  • Add a stationary train object to the railroad station (Done)

Not all of these are 100% completed, but I am getting close. I'm also looking to add more objects on the terrain to shoot at and to liven up the atmosphere a little. I expect this terrain project to take me a couple of more months. When it's finished, I will attempt to transpose these modifications to Snowy Somme. Then, FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 will be completed and released.

There is an announcement on the Sierra community forums that on 01-Nov-2008 a lot of game servers will be shut down. This is caused by the merger between Blizzard and Activison and the intention to cut costs.

***********************************************
Announcement: Sierra Game Servers Closing Down
Posted By: Eric@Sierra
Created in: System (Global Announcement)
Posted: Oct 7, 2008 1:29 PM
The following game servers will be shut down as of 11/01/08:

1. Alien vs Predator 2
2. Arcanum
3. Caesar IV
4. Dark Reign 2
5. Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
6. Empire Earth
7. Empire Earth 2
8. Empire Earth: Age of Conquest
9. Ground Control
10. Ground Control2
11. Homeworld
12. Homeworld: Cataclysm
13. Nolf2
14. Red Baron
15. Sanity
16. Star Trek: Armada
17. SWAT3: EE
18. SWAT3: GOTY
19. The Incredible Machine
20. Tribes2
21. Vampire
***********************************************

This step was expected since last year a lot of Sierra game servers were already shut down for example the NASCAR servers.

How does this affect Red Baron II/3D?
There is speculation that only the 'Red Baron Arcade' server will be affected. But most likely the EAST WON Meta Server for Red Baron II/3D Multiplayer will be affected also as the 10-year-contract between Sierra and World Opponent Network (WON) will cease on 31-Oct-2008 and will not be renewed.

If this happens and you intend to play RB3D MMP then you should open up your mplayer.ini file in the RB3D folder and comment out all WON Meta servers in the [MetaServers] section with a preceding // and after that you should add some entries for Meta Servers run by members of the Red Baron 3D Community. It should look like this:

[MetaServers]
// Server=TCP:rb2.west.won.net:6001 ; CA Titan Server 216.52.220.23 - not working anymore
// Server=TCP:rb2.east.won.net:6001 ; NY Titan Server 63.251.143.210 - switched on and off intermittently since 06-Oct-2007
// Server=UDP:dyn-meta.dynamix.com:47801 ; Baron Meta Server - switched off since early 2000
Server=TCP:depotserver.de:6001 ; Longarth's Meta Server
Server=TCP:82.95.229.75:6001 ; Rens' Meta Server
Server=TCP:66.225.104.67:6001 ; Tiger's Meta Server

See also the statement in the Sierra Classics Forum about switching off also various Sierra Forums. There are plans to set up a private site and forum for all Sierra games on www.sierrachest.com.

I have uploaded some Red Baron II/3D files from my archives:

* Pat Wilson's 'Western Front Patch Version 7.1' (this is WFP1 not WFP2)
* Cameron Riley's 'Flander's Fields Patch' including Add Ons

From what I know you can not find them anywhere on the web. Now you can find them on the Red Baron II/3D Superpatches download page.

There is some update by OFF Team leader Winder about the Phase 3 progress:

"Just a quick update that I thought might be needed especially as SOH have lost all the threads - as we all know."

"We have been flat out these past few weeks testing and tweaking and fixing bugs - things are really starting to come together quite well now. Yes you can tell we are also not rushing it but it still has been a hectic few weeks or is that months since we started testing. No I am not committing to any date as per usual - we all have days jobs etc."

"I have noticed a few comments out there about the OFF vids looking good because they are all human players in an MP session … Well just for the record all the videos as made by Polovski are shot in campaign mode with only Pol against the AI."

"So in reality this is encouraging to hear that the AI look that human - but they are still just AI!!"

As today is the 91st anniversary of the epic dogfight between Werner Voss and seven pilots from 56 Squadron RFC - the most legendary aerial combat ever - First Eagles player 'Southside Bucky' has made a special mission for First Eagles + Expansion Pack 1.

"This Mission is a re-enactment of an actual aerial combat that took place at about 6:30pm, on Sunday, 23rd September, 1917, in the skies above Poelcapelle and Westroosebeke, about 7-8 miles NE of Ypres, in Belgium."

"The action involved seven SE5a's of 56 Sqn, the RFC's premier fighter unit, and Lt. Werner Voss, a 48 victory ace and a holder of the coveted Ordre Pour Le Merite (Blue Max)."

I have done some re-arrangements on the site. If you look on the lefthandside navigation you will notice that I have moved the abandoned projects into a respective section below the list of released W.W.I flight simulations.

Also I have moved the 'new' Knights Of The Sky project into the 'Rise Of Flight' section as there was a name change by the developers neoqb. In the 'Knights Of The Sky' section there are now some information and screenshots of the 'old' Knights Of The Sky flight simulation by MicroProse (1990).

The same goes for the 'Knights Of The Sky' and 'Rise Of Flight' section in the forum.

Busy day today for collecting news ;o)

VikS, member of the neoqb Team released an official statement regarding Rise Of Flight:

"Last days there was a lot of rumours about KOTS/AOF/ROF etc. So our team wants to say - thanks to all of you, who wait our project and look for more information about it (Rise of Flight)."

"We didn't expect such huge attention to all details of the project about the period of World War I after some info input at the Leipzig Game Convention 2008. Last few months we have been concentrated only on getting the alpha-version of ROF and we didn't paid much attention to controlling all information links around us."

"Our next step: we are working hard to launch official website of ROF and our team blog, where you can read all information about our project and discuss all things closely with us."

"Sorry once again!"

"Stay tuned and have fun! ;)"

OFF Team leader Winder just gave a heads up that 'Over Flanders Fields - Between Heaven and Hell' (also referenced as Phase 3) may be released in the near future. Also the website was updated heavily.

Click to view a larger image

"Just a heads up - Polovski updated the website last night to reflect current status - we wish we had more time to spend on that aspect but hey we have been busy!"

"We have basically met every one of our design goals and at this moment in time I am building a Beta3 build which, apart from going out to the team for final testing, is also being sent out to a few select chosen SOH users for external beta test - you know who you are!"

"Drop into www.overflandersfields.com and refresh your browsers to see what the latest is.
Also here is the confirmed features list as at this moment in time - note the "possible extra craft" will not make release but depending on sales we may well make addon packs in the future: Feature List.
We still reserve the right to change this list but we will inform you in that event. At the moment in Beta3 all these features are in and working - this is real and no vapourware endeavour."

"Finally we are most proud of what we as a team have achieved - we have realised all the design goals and issue fixes and added in some more just for kicks …"

"OFF BHH is more than an addon for CFS3 - it rewrites it."

Source: Sim-Outhouse Forums

Click to view a larger image

Here are some items from the feature list. It is far too big to post here:

Weather, Scenery, Terrain and Effects:
  • NEW For P3!: Fully revised and updated high resolution terrain and all new scenery models, to suit the WW1 era. Some of the finest scenery yet to be seen in a combat flight sim
  • NEW For P3!: All original CFS3 terrain is now replaced - everywhere - with high resolution terrain graphics
  • NEW For P3!: Fully Dynamic weather - weather changes as player flies - in real time

Dynamic Campaign Engine and simulator Manager:
  • NEW For P3!: Full High resolution graphical interface, Wrapper and Campaign Manager now runs automatically at desktop resolution
  • NEW For P3!: Historically based mission types and aircraft traffic density changes over time and balance of power and air traffic density swings as it did historically
  • NEW For P3!: Up to 226 aircraft are dynamically rendered in the players region above and beyond the mission flight complement in real time. These additional craft are all operating from real squadrons and real airbases, carrying out real tasks and attacking real targets as they did historically. This is scaleable for CPU power - balance between forces is always maintained irrespective of scale selected.
Total rendered craft is basically unlimited and can be increased in the future

Aircraft List for P3: Note there will be no Heavy bombers in P3 - they will be part of an upgrade pack.

Allied Single seaters:
Bristol F2B (fighter role) NEW For P3!
Bristol M1C ("Bullet") - NEW For P3!

There is already a website for the upcoming W.W.I flight simulation 'Rise Of Flight' on www.riseofflight.com. This was not made publicly available by the neoqb Team but was found out by wwiaircombat.com.

Click to view a larger image

The website seems to be still in development but there is some game info and screenshots. Also there is the link to the Blog that has been floating around the forums but there still seems a lot of construction work ahead. Seems as this website was set up to help in the search for a publisher as it as started on 1st of August just before the Games Convention in Leipzig/Germany.

According to the website game features include:
  • Military conflict in Europe 1917-1918 with the participating countries England, France, USA and Germany
  • Various missions for players as air combat with known aces, updating artillery fire, scouting missions, (ground?) support missions and bomber intercept missions
  • Brand new game engine
  • Alive world - huge territory (125 000 km², giving maximal freedom of decision-making to players)
  • Realistic map where battles take place
  • Realistic physical model of planes and aerodynamics
  • Realistic model of plane dynamics and detailed engine parts
  • Combined management of all ingame technical equipment together with AI
  • Simple to play
  • Automatic adjustment of AI depending on player piloting style
  • An Opportunity to create individual colors for planes with PaintKit
  • Opportunity to play with many players from all over the world in one game space
  • Virtual museum - a new way of studying history of airplanes, pilots and WW I
  • Almost cinematic special effects

Not sure how the attribute 'simple to play' fits in with the rest of the specs as 'realistic model of plane dynamics'.

The website is refering to an alpha stage of the simulation (main page entry from 12th of August) so there is room for speculations if a reported release date of 2008 can still be met. Alpha is a really early stage for software development where key features are implemented. After alpha stage comes beta stage with intense testing and improvement work and then finally the release.

Also some minimal system requirements are given:
  • Platform: PC
  • Processor: CoreDuo (Intel) 2.4 Ghz
  • RAM: 2 GByte
  • Hard drive: 4 GByte
  • Videocard: 256 MByte onboard memory (NVidia GeForce 8600 series or higher)
  • Internet: speed at least 256 kb/s
  • Operation system: Windows XP/Windows Vista

There are indications that RoF currently is running 25-30% slower on Windows Vista than on Windows XP (Source: simhq.com) but this is an alpha version of the game and there are still alot of optimizations to be done.

In the screenshots section the two planes you mainly see are the Fokker D.VII and Spad XIII which are reported to be the two planes included in the initial release of the simulation.

Another flight simulation fan visited neoqb on the Games Convention held some days ago in Leipzig/Germany and got some more in-depth information about Rise Of Flight and also two new videos. The following is translated information from his German website which can be visited by the link on the bottom.

He supports former speculations about the release concept of the game. First there will be a basic pack released that can be improved later individually by additional planes liable to costs. This will be done to generate a sound financial backing of the company neoqb. There is also a rumour that neoqb will release another game title to improve the financial backing furthermore.

The Rise Of Flight development team members have a long-term experience with flight sim programming:
  • Albert Zhiltsov, Gaming Producer, former projects: IL-2 Sturmovik

"A little statement about unofficial news - nothing is decided yet, I mean about setting and mission builder. So everyone - please wait until official ones.
When? Well, right now we are summing up Leipzig results, so I think 'two weeks' is smh close ;o)"

There is some inofficial information from the Games Convention about neoqb's W.W.I flight sim currently titled 'Rise Of Flight':

"On Games Convention neoqb got offers from publishers in Europe and Russia. Still not sure about distribution methods. Could only confirm SPAD XIII and Fokker D.VII being in release for sure. Not certain about mission editor - may release it with the game, a bit later on or keep it to themselves forever. They will give players the paint kit to show off your fabric designs online. If everything goes well the full game with all add-ons will cover all aircraft from 1914 to 1918."

We keep to the subject.

I am a little bit late but there is a note by TK regarding the possibility of Expansion Packs 2 and 3 for the First Eagles W.W.I flight simulation and Windows Vista compatibility.

'We do have plans for FE pack 2 and 3, but they're still at least a year or two away.'

'If you have Vista, I'd recommend you wait until we have proper Vista/DX10 version out at the end of this year/early next year. And I'm saying this to save you money, so you don't end up buying the same game twice.'

'If you don't mind buying the game twice, then by all means, the same mods/workarounds for WOI should be applicable to FE to play it under Vista - play with Admin rights, install to non-default folder outside the "Program Files", disable the shader effects, etc.'

There is a new information that the new W.W.I flight sim by neoqb will be called 'Rise Of Flight'. This is an unofficial information from the neoqb Team which is currently present at the Games Convention in Leipzig/Germany.

More unofficial information from neoqb's product manager and from their chief technology officer:
  • neoqb is still searching for a publisher but aims for a 2008 release.
  • It is planned to release a basic version of the simulation with two (?) planes and a large map.
  • More planes will be available as add ons to be bought separately. The planes will cost money only when the player wants to fly them. They are free of charge when flown by the in game AI within missions.
  • An update in the beginning of next year will introduce planes (bombers) with 2 or 3 crew members (pilot, bombardier and gunner).
  • It is planned to have controllable ground units in single player.
  • There will be a mission editor but it will not be published. The developer may charge for additional missions created by them.
  • For online play there will be a publicly available server software capable of holding 128 players per map.
  • here will be no AI controlled ground units in multi player.
  • There will be a simple interface to plan missions, for example escort missions for bombers, in a fast and easy way.
  • With the support of Intel the game engine has been improved to hold around 40 fps during air battles although the flight models and physics are based on dynamic flow calculations. Those calculations will not only apply to the player's aircraft but also on AI controlled aircraft.

Source (in German)

Again this information is still unofficial. If it turns out that way then the whole flight sim concept will be very different from what was expected initially.

OFF Team leader Winder has posted some news regarding OFF Phase 3:

'O.K where to start, well I am close to building a complete Beta2 for the final test phase - the team will get to grips with this final beta build over the next few weeks.

Some Build Trivia:

OFF P3 comprises:

Over 19000 files
Over 3000 hi res aircraft skins
It requires 15Gb of drive space.
With Ultra64 compression we should be able to ship on one DVD.
Downloads online should be feasible but we will post more info on this closer to the time - no promises

And some good news in general:

We are at this stage confident that OFF will be fully Vista compatible.

Tom has managed to sort the Vista Trackir/CFS3 compatibility issue and we are liaising with Naturalpoint on this so that all CFS3 users who want to run on Vista can benefit - not only OFF users.'

That sounds great and hopefully a release date is getting closer now.

There is word from neoqb the makers of the new flight sim called 'Knights Of The Sky' that they had to change the name of the sim:

'Its a new name for KOTS, our management found some problems with the "Knights of the Sky" branding….it has nothing to do with our aviation sim deal. It still will be a WWI aviation simulation, and we're sure it will be the best aviation simulator on the market.'

This move was expected by me as Microprose still holds the rights to their old W.W.I flight sim from 1991 named 'Knights Of The Sky' which was a competitor to the first 'Red Baron' flight sim by Dynamix.

The new name of neoqb's W.W.I flight sim will be 'Age of Flight'.

KoA v. Deutschmark has informed me about various projects he is involved with:

Cold War: Red Baron II/3D multi player series
-------------------------------------------------------

Cold War is an effort to improve the multi player experience for the Red Baron 3D multi player using new planes, flight models (based on AFM) and tournament rules. Therefore KoA v. Deutschmark has created various new planes like for example Siemens Schuckert D.III or Sopwith Dolphin.

The Cold War St. Mihiel war re-enactement will be a big online event with a massive amount of planes online. This was in the news already on 20th March 2008.

Cold War St. Mihiel will be a recreation of the conflict of September 12th-16th of 1918. This re-enactment will take place in 4 scenarios of 2 ½ hrs. over 2 days.

Saturday September 13th, 2008
The First Scenario Morning of September 12th, 1918
The Second Scenario Night of September 13th, 1918

Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Third Scenario "Big Day" Mid Day September 14th, 1918
Fourth Scenario Late Afternoon September 15th, 1918

"We have taken the Red Baron 3 D game and have made many updates to it in order to create a historically correct scenario. Including updating the battle map to be near exact representation of the battlefield at the beginning of the battle and near the last day of the battle."

"The plane list has also been modified to include actual plane models that flew in that battle bearing the markings of their actual respective squadron …"

"You will see everything from flyable Salmson 2a 2, Hannover CL.I, and DH 9s to German fighter such as the Siemens Schuckert D.III and the Pfalz D.IIIa and Allied fighters such as the venerable SPAD XIII late and the FE2d Night Fighter …"

KoAv. Deutschmark has announced that another event is planned for 2009:

Cold War #5 Tournament for 2009 will start in the second weekend of January 2009 and run until the third weekend of April 2009.

Signups start on September 1, 2008 and close on December 18, 2008. More details to come as time gets closer!.

Also you can look at the new RB game improvements being made for CW #5 tournament for 2009 at this forum thread.

You will find more information on Cold War on the official website and the official forum.

Blue Max will be geared towards the multi player genre. There will be no single player campaign part. The game will use a real world physics engine that allows to show damage on the planes and ground objects in real time withpout using the classic damage model approach.

Dantes has posted some nice screenshots of a visual enhancement for Red Baron II/3D. Well, it is not only for Red Baron 3D but for DirectX9 games like IL-2 as discussed in this forum thread. It is a DX9 plug-in generating the Bloom effect and most of the screenshots you can find on the web have the settings overdone. The settings are adjustable and one needs to find out the right settings for each game.

Dantes was the first to try it on Red Baron 3D with the dgVoodoo Glide Wrapper which can run with DirectX9 depending on the settings of the wrapper. This is a great find. Look at these awesome screenshots Dantes has made. They are straight out of the game and contain no postwork.

Dantes has uploaded a zipped package with his custom settings suitable for Red Baron II/3D here. The settings for the effects can be altered.

Note: This will work with the dgVoodoo Glide Wrapper only as it is based on DirectX. It will not work with the OpenGLide Wrapper as this is based on OpenGL.

Dantes also made a video showing the differences with the plug-in and without:

See Dantes' posting on SimHQ here.

The plug-in author's homepage is here.

A very interesting post emerged on the Wings Of Valor forum. Limited access was granted but unfortunately Vivendi seems to be unable to locate the source code after the several corporate acquisitions of the past.

From ArgonV:

Due to the changes made in squadrons, countries and medal data FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 will NOT be compatible with WW2 SDOE. It is meant to be a completely stand-alone mod from here on out. There is no way around this due to how score.ppf and gui.ppf work.

I will be releasing this in the following versions:

-All-In-One
-Individual download installer files
-Individual download installer files with 8-bit aircraft textures (Reduced download size)

The FS-WWI Themed 1.6.0.6 Patch will be the only update patch to use. Standard 1.6.0.6 has been dropped.

Just a friendly heads up.

By the way: Plane Pack 5 will contain 50 aircraft.

This review contains information about the movie 'Der Rote Baron' and as such will be a spoiler. For those of you that want to watch the movie unprejudiced … don't read it. This review is seen from the perspective of a W.W.I flight sim fan. I am not a historian.

The movie was about 2 hours length. I tried to look at every detail in every scene thus it may have happened that I have overseen some things. So please forgive me if I leave out details that are more important to you than these I am writing about. This review is written with tongue in cheek. Don't take it too seriously. Yet you get the idea where this movie is aimed at.

Matthias Schweighoefer acts as the Red BaronHe is a handsome, blond, young pilot - and he's not your typical baddie.

In the new film The Red Baron, which had its premiere in Berlin on Monday night, Germany's legendary flying ace, Manfred von Richthofen, is portrayed as an emotional, sensitive man.

A replica of the Fokker triplane from World War I was planted outside the CineStar cinema in Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, as crowds gathered for the traditional red-carpet welcome.

Funnily enough, although the film has been billed as a taboo-breaker, given the fact that von Richthofen is depicted as a heroic figure, many young Germans have hardly heard of him. But, like it or not, the film is bound to provoke another round of soul-searching about Germany's wartime past.

Dashing airmen
Young pilots of Jasta 11Manfred von Richthofen, who shot down 80 British, Canadian and Australian pilots during World War I, is played by the dashing German actor, Matthias Schweighoefer. The film shows how 24-year-old Von Richthofen and his fellow airmen treat the war like a sport, hunting down the enemy in lively air-battle scenes. "It was fun," they say, after engaging in a dangerous dogfight. The pilots, who come from an upper-class background, behave like spoilt children.

But as the war progresses, and the casualties mount, Von Richthofen's initial idealism fades. The young pilot, known as "the Red Baron", who painted his plane red, falls in love with a nurse, played by the British actress Lena Headey.

Personal struggle
Von Richthofen gives her the credit for opening his eyes to the cruelty of war and after other pilots die in action, the Red Baron becomes disillusioned. In the film, he is seen to be undergoing an immense personal struggle.

On the one hand, Von Richthofen is portrayed as a German war hero, who led Jagdgeschwader I, a German squadron of fighter planes in his bright red Fokker triplane. But on the other hand, Von Richthofen falls in love and gradually realises that the war cannot be won. The film, with its sentimental touch, makes you aware of Von Richthofen's humanity. The young officer falls to pieces when his friends die, he buys a harmonica for a friend, and he feels embarrassed because he cannot dance well.

Hero of his time
Young pilots of Jasta 11For Germans, the film is controversial.

"You have a completely different perspective here," said the actor Matthias Schweighoefer, who plays the leading role, despite the fact that he used to be afraid of flying. "But I can understand that one has problems with a war hero."

The pilot acquired his nickname after he painted his plane red.

The 27-year-old actor said Von Richthofen was "a hero of his time … he was a brave man."

The fact that German soldiers are depicted as heroes is contentious.

Difficult territory
It is clear the makers of The Red Baron knew that they were venturing into tricky ground. But they claim it is an explicit anti-war film.

The writer and director of The Red Baron, Nikolai Muellerschoen, said: "Historically Germans have been reluctant and there are strong voices in Germany still saying we're not allowed to do this: a film about a German war hero. But the film makes a very clear statement against war. In it Richthofen says that he understands everyone has turned this world into a slaughterhouse and the war cannot be won. He says he's not going to be the immortal god that Berlin wants him to be; he knew millions were lured into the trenches with such propaganda."

The film, which cost 18m euros (£14m; $28m) to produce, also stars the British actor Joseph Fiennes as Capt Roy Brown, a Canadian pilot whose plane is shot down by Von Richthofen in their first aerial encounter.

The Red Baron
Manfred von Richthofen was born in Silesia in 1892 into a rich Prussian aristocratic family. He went to an army cadet school and after World War I broke out, he joined the Flying Service in 1915. In 1917, Von Richthofen was awarded the highest military honour in Germany at that time, the Blue Max.

Later, he became the commander of the Jagdgeschwader I (wing) formations, which became known as the Flying Circus, because the planes had to be moved around from aerodrome to aerodrome.

Von Richthofen was 25 years old when he was killed in combat in the Somme Valley in April 1918, shortly before his 26th birthday. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.

The film opens in German cinemas on 10 April and it will be interesting to see whether it rekindles interest in the legendary German flying ace.

The OFF Team has released a huge preliminary features list and a preview video of the upcoming Phase 3 of "Over Flanders Fields" titled "Between Heaven and Hell". When those features make it into the final release then this will be a major step for authentic W.W.I flight simulation. The features include dynamic campaign and weather, historical authenticity, more realistic damage models, more planes, improved AI and much more … Much more like Phase 2 this will be a total conversion of CFS3 superseding all what once was CFS3.

Take a peek at the list on the official OFF Forum and do not miss the preview video linked from there.

Mind you, Phase 3 is still in alpha stage, it did not reach beta stage as of yet. The final release date still is not set but I say "Way to go" to the OFF Team.

GennadichTeam has released the final version of their Fokker Dr.I for Microsoft's Flight Simulator X. Grab it here. Also included in the 140 MByte download are scenery files. A repaint PSD file for the Dr.I with a size of 23 MByte is there for download also.

Seems they made a name change and call themselves 'neoqb development team' now.
